Used 2020 BMW Z4 for Sale nearAustin, TX

Is the 2020 BMW Z4 a good car?

Yes — the 2020 BMW Z4 earns 4.7/5 from owners and 7.5/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise the Z4’s performance and handling, and they also call out the comfortable seats, smooth transmission, and powerful engine. That lines up with the car’s use case as a small convertible built for lively, responsive driving rather than just style.

The trade-offs are clear: outdated technology and some road noise from the soft top. Even so, if you want a roadster that feels engaging and comfortable for top-down cruising, the Z4 fits that brief well. Good and great deals account for 34.5% of listings, which gives you a decent chance of finding a competitive price.

Is the 2020 BMW Z4 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for the smooth transmission, comfortable seats, and powerful engine. The expert review also describes the Z4 as a well-sorted roadster with a strong driving character, and the cost-effectiveness notes emphasize that it can deliver six-cylinder performance for far less than some rivals.

If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright mechanical weakness and more about choosing a well-kept example with the right options and condition.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW Z4?

At 71.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been optioned heavily or driven hard. Pay close attention to body condition, soft-top operation, visibility-related wear, and any signs that the car has been used as a frequent open-top cruiser rather than a carefully maintained weekend car.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base sDrive30i brings the starting point for the Z4 with automatic LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming mirrors, automatic climate control, a 10.24-inch touchscreen, navigation, HD Radio, and Apple CarPlay, but Android Auto is missing. The M40i adds the inline-6, 19-inch wheels, and more of the performance-oriented equipment, making it the better fit if you want the strongest version of the car.
• Powertrain: The sDrive30i uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, while the M40i uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 with 382 hp and 368 lb-ft. The 4-cylinder is quicker than you might expect and can be the lighter, more efficient-feeling choice, while the inline-6 is the one to buy if you want the full performance experience.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes frontal collision warning with emergency braking and traffic-sign recognition. The Driving Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning, while the Convenience package adds rear cross-traffic alert, an automatic parking system, satellite radio, adaptive cruise, and smartphone key pairing.
• Infotainment: The Z4 uses a 10.24-inch touchscreen with BMW’s iDrive system, plus a virtual instrument panel. Wireless charging and a Wi-Fi hotspot are available with the Premium package, but Android Auto is absent and Apple CarPlay connection issues are noted.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter engine is described as getting to 60 mph in about 5.5 seconds, and the M40i is described as reaching 60 mph in about 4.5 seconds.

Which 2020 BMW Z4 trim should I buy?

The 2020 BMW Z4 is offered in 2 trim levels: sDrive30i and sDriveM40i.

Here's the short version:

• sDrive30i: This is the value play if you want the Z4 experience at the lower starting price. You still get the core roadster character, a strong list of standard features, and the 255-hp turbocharged 4-cylinder, which is lively enough for most buyers and lighter than the inline-6.
• sDriveM40i: This is the one to choose if performance is your priority. It brings the 3.0-liter inline-6, the Track Handling package equipment, and more of the desirable luxury and performance content already included, making it the best fit for buyers who want the Z4 at its most complete.

The safety package is still optional on both trims, so if driver-assistance features matter to you, make sure the example you’re considering has the right package.

Is the 2020 BMW Z4 safe?

The redesigned BMW Z4 has yet to be tested by the government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include frontal collision warning with emergency braking and traffic-sign recognition. The Driving Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning, while the Convenience package adds rear cross-traffic alert, an automatic parking system, satellite radio, adaptive cruise, and smartphone key pairing.

Should I buy a 2020 BMW Z4 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 71.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The inline 6-cylinder engine returns in M40i form this year, restoring the stronger performance that better matches the Z4’s sporty personality.

The bottom line: The 2020 Z4 is the right pick if you want the year that brings back the inline-6 and emphasizes performance over cabin tech. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2020 can still make sense, but you should be selective about condition and equipment because the market includes a meaningful share of accident history and the technology is a weak point.
