CarGurus Analysis: 2020 BMW X5
Summary
With 317 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,548, 43.8% of 2020 BMW X5 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 BMW X5 4.77 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2020 BMW X5 stands out as a luxury midsize SUV that blends strong road manners with a roomy, upscale cabin. BMW’s fourth-generation X5 brought more interior space, an oversized twin-kidney grille, and a pair of 12.3-inch digital displays for the instrumentation and infotainment system. It also kept the lineup focused on turbocharged inline six-cylinder and V8 power, with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. For buyers who want an SUV that feels more polished and engaging than merely practical, that combination is a major part of the appeal.
For 2020, BMW added a second V8-powered version, the X5 M50i, and brought back the full-fat X5 M with at least 600 horsepower; the X5 M Competition followed with 617 horses. Those performance models give the X5 a serious enthusiast edge, even if the tradeoff is an expensive purchase price and higher running costs. The broader lineup also benefits from the fourth generation’s improved refinement, and the X5 remains a strong choice for shoppers who want luxury, technology, and performance in one package.
There are still reasons to be cautious. BMW’s split tailgate design can make it harder to reach items that slide forward in the cargo area, and the X5’s reliability record is not especially strong compared with mainstream vehicles. V8-powered versions are also not fuel-efficient, which adds to ownership costs. Even so, the 2020 BMW X5 remains appealing because it delivers a rare mix of comfort, space, and driving enjoyment in a premium SUV.

It boasts exceptional build quality, both internally and externally, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship. Its interior provides unparalleled comfort, while its performance is commendable. Despite its class and engine size, it delivers respectable miles per gallon (mpg). In a straightforward comparison, the GLE with its 4-cylinder engine achieves similar mpg figures to the X5 with its 6-cylinder engine, despite the X5s superior speed. Additionally, the tech features function seamlessly, enhancing the overall driving experience. - Gustavo Woltmann

I have had 2 X5 models(2017 & 2020) both were amazing to drive. But the 2020 really made me feel like I was driving in luxury. The exterior is sleek, and sporty. Even with 20 inch wheels the drive is soft. The interior coffee color was stellar, took it up a whole other level. There is a wide variety of safety features to turn on or off. There is a clear 360 view of the parking camera. Large screen for center console area. This model specifically also kept drinks warm/cold in the cup holder. My favorite part of the interior though is the accent lighting. The whole moonroof would light up and you could always slide back the shade if you didn’t want it. When making the change from the 2017 to 2020 model, we looked at many SUVs and it was very hard to compare to other makers. This was why we ended up with the same vehicle and will probably do it again when ready!

How much does the 2020 BMW X5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $27,026 |
| Year-Round Low | $27,026 |
| Year-Round High | $30,749 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $30,753 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −12.12% |

There are 2,074 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and conditions.
Is the 2020 BMW X5 a good car?
Yes — the 2020 BMW X5 earns a 4.77/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its smooth ride, luxurious interior, and advanced technology, and they also value its comfort and spaciousness. That lines up well if you want a luxury midsize SUV that feels polished and engaging rather than merely practical. With 39.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer.
Is the 2020 BMW X5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.77/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback also highlights dependable-feeling ownership traits such as build quality, comfort, and a trouble-free overall experience for many drivers. At the same time, some owners mention complex tech systems and high maintenance costs, so you should expect ownership to reward careful upkeep. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that repair and maintenance expenses can rise faster than they would on a simpler SUV.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW X5?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should start with a history report to confirm accident status, title history, and service records. Then prioritize a thorough inspection of the electronics, infotainment, and other high-complexity systems, since those are the kinds of features owners say can be costly or frustrating if they misbehave. It also makes sense to focus on overall condition and maintenance evidence, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage or more heavily optioned example.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW X5?
This is a moderate market for buyers, so you can be selective without expecting deep bargain-bin pricing.
- Deal availability: 39.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,074 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.12% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 78.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $27,026, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 BMW X5's resale value?
The current average of $27,026 sits slightly below last year's $30,753.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. If you plan to sell later, the current softness means your future resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained. Strong demand for well-kept luxury SUVs can still support pricing, especially when the vehicle presents cleanly and has a good service history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.77/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 BMW X5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 39.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.12% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.77/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $24,739, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $27,026 average.
- It introduced the redesigned X5 with more room and updated tech.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $31,221, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $27,026 average.
- It adds a plug-in hybrid option for buyers wanting electrified driving.
The bottom line: The 2020 is the best all-around pick if you want the strongest mix of price, satisfaction, and market availability. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2019 is the smarter value play, while the 2021 makes sense if you want to spend more for the newer-year lineup and added hybrid choice.
