Why it stands out
The 2020 BMW 3 Series stands out as a sedan built for drivers who care as much about the experience behind the wheel as they do about everyday comfort. BMW’s own summary ties that appeal to the arrival of the 2020 BMW M340i, which sits between the existing 330i and the forthcoming M3, and says the company proves there is substance behind its “Ultimate Driving Machine” slogan. That positioning helps explain why the 2020 3 Series is easy to shortlist: it is meant to deliver a more engaging drive without giving up the comfort expected in a premium sedan.
Its strengths are straightforward. BMW highlights that it is fun to drive, comfortable, and powered by a powerful engine. Those traits make it appealing to buyers who want a car that feels lively and polished at the same time. At the same time, the 2020 BMW 3 Series is not without drawbacks. BMW notes that its design may be polarizing and that it is poor value for money, so shoppers drawn to its driving character may still want to weigh styling and pricing carefully.

I have test driven only the M 340. It is excellent. I am currently driving an M240 convertible and if I was not a lover of the open sky would definitely trade this in. The power delivery is excellent and the interior is well appointed. I love the tactile feel. The steering wheel is a nice touch. The only criticism is that getting into the back can be a bit of a chore if you are over 6 feet.

Simply it seemed to me that the BMW 3 is great but being a big guy I find it a bit too small in the cabin. .

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Generally — the 2020 BMW 3 Series earns 4.14/5 from owners and 8.17/10 from our experts.
The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.
Drivers repeatedly praise its beautiful design, strong performance, and comfortable interior, and the M340 variant gets especially high marks for power and driving dynamics. The overall appeal is that you get a sedan that feels lively and polished, with a cabin that still works for everyday use. BMW’s own overview also frames it as a car for you if you want engaging driving without giving up premium comfort.
The trade-offs are just as clear: BMW calls the design potentially polarizing and poor value for money, and expert notes point to a high starting price with plenty of costly options. That means you should like the driving character enough to accept the pricing and styling compromises.
Good and great deals account for 29.2% of listings, so there is some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.14/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that many drivers feel good about living with over time, with praise centered on performance, comfort, and a premium-feeling interior. That kind of response usually suggests you can count on the car to deliver the experience buyers expect from it, especially if you prioritize well-kept examples.
BMW also includes free scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles of ownership, which helps soften early ownership costs. Even so, used-buyer risk still comes down to condition, maintenance history, and how hard the car was driven.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?
At 71.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified, heavily optioned, or priced unusually low. Focus on bodywork quality, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s condition matches its asking price. Because this model can be expensive to buy and equip, you want the example that has been cared for, not just the one with the lowest sticker.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 330i starts at a much lower price than the M340i, and the M340i adds a more aggressive appearance and a stronger performance focus. If you want the best value, the 330i is the smarter starting point, while the M340i suits you if you care most about the driving experience.
- Powertrain: The M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and available xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW also emphasizes the car’s variable sport steering, rear-biased xDrive, rear M Sport differential, and M Sport brakes.
- Safety package: BMW says you need two Driving Assistance option packages to get all of its latest advanced driver-assistance systems. The systems are accurate, but smoothness can be inconsistent, and the lane-keeping assist can feel abrupt. The car earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating when equipped with the adaptive full LED headlights.
- Infotainment: The latest iDrive system includes a touchscreen display, natural voice recognition, gesture control, and the familiar knob and buttons. The touchscreen is easy to use, and the voice system can handle natural commands for navigation, climate, stereo, and more.
- Fuel efficiency: No mpg or MPGe figure is stated in the provided data.
Which 2020 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2020 BMW 3 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 330i, M340i.
Here's the short version:
- 330i: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core 3 Series experience at a much lower starting price than the M340i. If you want the best value and still care about the car’s premium feel and driving balance, this is the trim to start with.
- M340i: This is the trim for you if performance is the priority. It adds the turbocharged inline-6 power, xDrive availability, M Sport hardware, and the most enthusiast-focused setup in the lineup.
BMW says you need two Driving Assistance option packages to get all of its latest advanced driver-assistance systems, so check equipment carefully before you buy.

- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.34% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,671.75, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $24,036 sits slightly below last year's $25,664.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently today but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy a clean, well-maintained example so you preserve as much value as possible. Strong condition and desirable equipment matter more when the market is already softer.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.14/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series safe?
The 2020 BMW 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS when equipped with the adaptive full LED headlights.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
BMW says you need two Driving Assistance option packages to get all of its latest advanced driver-assistance systems. The systems include lane-keeping assist, and BMW notes that the lane-keeping assist can feel abrupt. The broader package is accurate when used, but smoothness is not always its strong suit.
Should I buy a 2020 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.34% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.14/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- BMW’s own summary says the 2020 M340i proves there is substance behind the brand’s “Ultimate Driving Machine” slogan.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $20,856, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $24,036 average.
- It is trim, athletic, and notably improved by BMW’s software upgrades.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $25,734, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $24,036 average.
- It adds the 330e plug-in hybrid and broadens the lineup.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of price movement, inventory, and enthusiast appeal, the 2020 is the one to target. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2019 is the better value play, while the 2021 makes sense if you want the newer lineup and are willing to pay more.
