How much does the 2019 Volvo XC40 cost?

Prices have softened 12.48% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 289 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2019 Volvo XC40 a good car?

Yes — the 2019 Volvo XC40 earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Form and function.

Drivers consistently praise its safety features, ample power, and luxurious feel, and many also call out its standout design and performance. The XC40’s upscale character and distinctive styling fit well if you want a premium-leaning subcompact SUV that feels more special than the average entry in the segment.

The trade-offs are the tech interface, which some owners find complicated, and the transmission, which can be irritating. The market still shows healthy interest, with 38.1% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2019 Volvo XC40 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Drivers describe the XC40 as dependable in the ways that matter most to used buyers, especially when it comes to safety, power, and day-to-day confidence. The ownership experience also leans toward trouble-free satisfaction for many shoppers who value Volvo’s long-term reputation for security and comfort.

The expert evaluation also points to strong performance and a well-rounded package, which supports the idea that this is a vehicle you can count on if it has been maintained properly. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a neglected example could be more frustrating to live with because of its transmission and visibility issues.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Volvo XC40?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if it looks clean on the listing page. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important here because the XC40’s visibility and transmission quirks can affect how the vehicle feels in real use. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the tech and safety systems operate as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The XC40 comes in Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription. Momentum is technically the base trim, but it comes well equipped with 18-inch wheels, integrated bright aluminum roof rails, LED signature headlights, a leather steering wheel and shift knob, power windows and doors, and the large 9-inch Sensus touchscreen infotainment display. R-Design adds a unique front grille, contrasting black roof, integrated dual tailpipes, a sport steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a charcoal headliner, and ambient interior lighting. Inscription adds unique badging, a panoramic sunroof, driftwood door inlays, and an Orrefors crystal gearshift knob.
• Powertrain: The XC40 uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It sends power through an 8-speed automatic to standard all-wheel drive, and the drive modes include Comfort, Eco, Dynamic, Off-Road, and Individual.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes a full array of airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, a whiplash protection system, road-sign information updates, a rear-collision warning system, and City Safe automatic braking that can detect cars, pedestrians, and large animals. The optional Vision Package adds blind-spot detection, cross-traffic alert, and Pilot Assist with adaptive cruise control. The Advanced Package adds a 360-degree camera, LED foglights with a cornering function, and automatically bending headlights.
• Infotainment: The XC40 uses a large 9-inch Sensus touchscreen in portrait orientation. Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto work seamlessly with the system, and the available Multimedia Package adds navigation and a 15-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: Fuel-economy estimates are 23 mpg city, 31 highway, and 26 combined.

Which 2019 Volvo XC40 trim should I buy?

The 2019 Volvo XC40 is offered in 3 trim levels: Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription.

Here's the short version:

• Momentum: This is the best-value trim because it already gives you the core XC40 experience with 18-inch wheels, LED signature headlights, roof rails, and the 9-inch Sensus touchscreen. If you want the most affordable way into the model without giving up the upscale feel, this is the one to start with.
• R-Design: Choose this if you want a sportier look and a more tailored cabin. It adds a unique grille, black roof, dual tailpipes, a sport steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a charcoal headliner, and ambient lighting.
• Inscription: Pick this if you want the most upscale presentation. It adds unique badging, a panoramic sunroof, driftwood inlays, and an Orrefors crystal gearshift knob.

The Vision Package is worth noting because it adds blind-spot detection, cross-traffic alert, and Pilot Assist.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Volvo XC40?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing softness to make shopping worthwhile if you compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 38.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 289 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.48% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 77.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $18,202, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Volvo XC40's resale value?

The current average of $18,209 sits slightly below last year's $20,804.

That decline suggests the XC40 has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you shop carefully now, you may have less downside left than a buyer who paid closer to the original market peak.

The current pricing trend also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment. Well-kept examples with strong features and clean history should remain easier to move than neglected ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Volvo XC40 safe?

The 2019 Volvo XC40 earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes standard with a full array of airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, a whiplash protection system, road-sign information updates, a rear-collision warning system, and City Safe automatic braking that can detect cars, pedestrians, and large animals. The optional Vision Package adds blind-spot detection, cross-traffic alert, and Pilot Assist with adaptive cruise control, while the Advanced Package adds a 360-degree camera, LED foglights with a cornering function, and automatically bending headlights.

One important caveat is rearward visibility: the XC40’s large C-pillars create major blind spots, and the poor shifter design adds another safety concern in everyday use.

Should I buy a 2019 Volvo XC40 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 38.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.48% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2019 XC40 stands out for its upscale feel, ingenious cargo solutions, and advanced technology, but it also has a transmission that can be irritating and poor visibility.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest value from this generation, the 2019 is a sensible place to shop because pricing has softened and the model still delivers the premium character that makes the XC40 appealing. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep comparing listings closely and prioritize clean-history examples with the equipment you want.
