Is the 2019 Volvo XC40 a good car?

Yes — the 2019 Volvo XC40 earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Form and function.

You get a premium-feeling small SUV with standout design, strong safety appeal, and a luxurious cabin character that many owners appreciate. The user feedback also points to ample power and a distinctive personality, while the overview highlights ingenious cargo solutions and advanced technology. The main trade-offs are a transmission that can be irritating and a touchscreen-heavy interface that some drivers find complicated. Is the 2019 Volvo XC40 reliable?

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Volvo XC40?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a thorough test drive and inspection of the transmission behavior, visibility, and touchscreen operation, since those are the areas most likely to affect your daily experience. Focus on overall condition and make sure the equipment you want is actually present on the specific vehicle you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Momentum comes well equipped with 18-inch wheels, integrated bright aluminum roof rails, LED signature headlights with the “Thor’s Hammer” design, a leather steering wheel and shift knob, power windows and doors, and the large 9-inch Sensus touchscreen infotainment display. The R-Design adds a unique front grille, contrasting black roof, integrated dual tailpipes, a sport steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a charcoal headliner, and ambient interior lighting. The Inscription adds unique badging, a panoramic sunroof, driftwood door inlays, and an Orrefors crystal gearshift knob.
• Powertrain: The XC40 uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive. The drive modes include Comfort, Eco, Dynamic, Off-Road, and Individual, and the Dynamic setting sharpens acceleration and steering feel.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes a full array of airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, a whiplash protection system, road-sign information updates, rear-collision warning, and City Safe automatic braking that can detect cars, pedestrians, and large animals. The Vision Package adds blind-spot detection, cross-traffic alert, and Pilot Assist with adaptive cruise control. The Advanced Package adds a 360-degree camera, LED foglights with a cornering function, and automatically bending headlights.
• Infotainment: The XC40 uses a large 9-inch Sensus touchscreen in portrait orientation, with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system routes most vehicle functions through the screen, and the available Multimedia Package adds navigation and a 15-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The XC40 is rated at 23 mpg city, 31 highway, and 26 combined.

Which 2019 Volvo XC40 trim should I buy?

The 2019 Volvo XC40 is offered in 3 trim levels: Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription.

Here's the short version:

• Momentum: This is the best-value trim because it already comes well equipped with the 9-inch Sensus touchscreen, LED signature headlights, roof rails, and a leather steering wheel and shift knob. If you want the XC40’s core style and tech without stretching for extras, this is the trim to start with.
• R-Design: Choose this if you want a sportier look and a more distinctive cabin, thanks to the unique grille, black roof, dual tailpipes, sport steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, charcoal headliner, and ambient lighting.
• Inscription: Pick this if you want the most upscale presentation, with the panoramic sunroof, driftwood inlays, and crystal gearshift knob giving it the most premium feel of the group.

The safety package content also notes that the Vision Package adds blind-spot detection, cross-traffic alert, and Pilot Assist, while the Advanced Package adds a 360-degree camera, LED foglights with a cornering function, and automatically bending headlights.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Volvo XC40?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 280 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.56% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 76.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $18,185, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Volvo XC40's resale value?

The current average of $18,185 sits slightly below last year's $20,798.

That price movement suggests the XC40 has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right number. If you purchase near the current market average or below it, you may have less downside left than a buyer who paid closer to original pricing. Strong demand for well-kept examples can also help support values over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Volvo XC40 safe?

The 2019 Volvo XC40 earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes a full array of airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, a whiplash protection system, road-sign information updates, rear-collision warning, and City Safe automatic braking that can detect cars, pedestrians, and large animals. The Vision Package adds blind-spot detection, cross-traffic alert, and Pilot Assist with adaptive cruise control, while the Advanced Package adds a 360-degree camera, LED foglights with a cornering function, and automatically bending headlights.

One important caveat is that the XC40’s massive C-pillars create poor rearward visibility, and the shifter design adds another safety concern because it can be confusing to use.

Should I buy a 2019 Volvo XC40 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.56% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2019 model year stands out for its premium small-SUV personality, ingenious cargo solutions, and advanced technology.

The bottom line: If you want the XC40’s distinctive style, premium feel, and strong owner satisfaction at a softened market price, the 2019 is a solid place to start. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep shopping the broader market and compare listings carefully, since the current inventory still gives you room to find a better-than-average deal.
