Is the 2019 Subaru Ascent a good car?

Yes — the 2019 Subaru Ascent earns a 4.8/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its comfort, safety features, stylish design, and family-friendly space. The Ascent’s standard all-wheel drive and three-row layout make it a strong fit if you want a practical SUV for people and cargo, while the roomy cabin supports everyday family use. The main trade-offs are a desire for more power and a cramped third row, so you should weigh those against your passenger needs.

For long-term ownership, the biggest risk is making sure the specific vehicle you choose has been maintained well and doesn’t show signs of heavy family use or wear.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Subaru Ascent?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if it looks clean on paper. Prioritize a careful inspection of the third row, interior wear, and any signs of prior damage or poor repair work. Because this is a family-focused SUV, condition matters a lot in the areas that see the most daily use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Base trim gives you 18-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, 4 USB ports, 19 cupholders, and 3-zone climate control with vents for all three rows. Premium adds a windshield de-icer, an 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, upgraded stain-resistant cloth upholstery, 4G LTE Wi-Fi capability, second-row climate controls, an 8-inch touchscreen, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Limited adds 20-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights that respond to steering inputs, a power liftgate, leather seating, heated first- and second-row seats, a heated steering wheel, remote keyless entry with push-button start, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, additional second- and third-row USB ports, automatic high beams, and reverse automatic emergency braking. Touring adds satin chrome side mirrors with integrated turn signals, chrome door handles, ventilated front seats, woodgrain interior accent panels, an upgraded auto-dimming rear-view mirror with HomeLink buttons, a 120-volt wall-style power outlet, and a 180-degree front-view camera.
• Powertrain: The Ascent uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine with 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT and standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. The engine is the only one available, and it delivers plenty of pickup for city and highway driving.
• Safety package: EyeSight driver-assist technology is standard on all trims and includes pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Premium, Limited, and Touring also add blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert. Limited and Touring add automatic high beams and reverse automatic emergency braking.
• Infotainment: Base trims get a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All other trims get an 8-inch touchscreen. The system also includes physical buttons and dials for easier day-to-day use.
• Fuel efficiency: The Ascent returns 21 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined. Limited and Touring trims drop to 20/26/22.

Which 2019 Subaru Ascent trim should I buy?

The 2019 Subaru Ascent is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, Premium, Limited, Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the value play if you want the Ascent’s core strengths at the lowest entry price. You still get standard all-wheel drive, EyeSight safety tech, three-row climate control, and a useful set of everyday features, but you give up some comfort and convenience upgrades found higher up the range.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds heated front seats, an 8-inch touchscreen, Wi-Fi capability, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert without jumping all the way to the pricier upper trims.
• Limited: This is the right choice if you want a more upscale cabin and more convenience features, including leather seating, heated second-row seats, a power liftgate, and reverse automatic emergency braking. It’s also the trim that brings in more premium lighting and interior touches.
• Touring: This is the pick if you want the most equipment and the most premium feel, including ventilated front seats, a 120-volt outlet, and the 180-degree front-view camera. It suits you best if you want the most fully loaded Ascent.

EyeSight is standard across the lineup, while blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert start on Premium and above.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Subaru Ascent?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,390 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.43% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 77.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,076, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Subaru Ascent's resale value?

The current average of $17,076 sits slightly below last year's $19,499.

That price movement suggests the Ascent has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it’s time to sell. The model’s family-friendly appeal and standard safety equipment should continue to support demand among used buyers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

EyeSight driver-assist technology is standard on all trims and includes pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Subaru also equips the Ascent with a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, vehicle dynamics control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Premium, Limited, and Touring add blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert, while Limited and Touring add automatic high beams and reverse automatic emergency braking.

Should I buy a 2019 Subaru Ascent or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.43% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It brings standard all-wheel drive and standard advanced safety features to a family-focused three-row SUV.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $19,514, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $17,076 average.
• It keeps the same family-size mission while broadening the appeal to buyers who need extra room for people, pets, and cargo.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2019 is the stronger buy because it’s cheaper and still well equipped. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2020 is the cleaner alternative for shoppers who want to stay within the Ascent formula.

How does the 2019 Subaru Ascent compare to the 2019 Honda Pilot?

Our experts score the 2019 Subaru Ascent 8/10 and the 2019 Honda Pilot 8.3/10. The Ascent gives you standard all-wheel drive and a lower average used price, which makes it appealing if you want value and all-weather confidence. The Pilot counters with more horsepower and a slightly stronger expert score, plus a larger pool of listings. If you care most about price and standard AWD, the Ascent makes sense; if you want the stronger overall benchmark, the Pilot has the edge.
