The Porsche Boxster has been around since the 1990s, but the little 2-seater went into its fourth generation in 2017 with many changes. For 2019, Porsche marketed the Boxster as the “718 Boxster” as a nod to the 718 RSK racing cars of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Other updates for 2019 include new standard features, like a sport-exhaust system and Porsche’s Car Connect infotainment system. The Boxster GTS, introduced last year, returns for 2019.
Trims include the base Boxster, the mid-range Boxster S, and the Boxster GTS. The base Boxster makes 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, while the Boxster S bumps things up to 350 hp and 309 lb-ft of torque. The range-topping GTS trim, meanwhile, makes a whopping 365 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque.
Each Boxster moves quickly: The base trim hits 60 miles per hour in 4.9 seconds, the Boxster S does it in 4.4 seconds, and the Boxster GTS does it in less than 4 seconds when it comes equipped with the Sport Chrono Package. The Boxster also gets decent fuel economy. A base Boxster with the standard 6-speed manual returns 21 mpg city, 28 highway, and 24 combined, while the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, called a PDK, gets 1 mpg more in each category. The Boxster S manages 20, 26, and 22 with a 6-speed and gets 21, 28, and 24 with the dual-clutch automatic. Finally, the Boxster GTS gets 20, 26, 22 with the automatic and 19, 25, and 21 with the manual.
The base trim features a power-folding soft top, well-bolstered seats, a 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, and high-quality fit and finish. Options include Apple CarPlay, navigation, a better Burmester stereo, wood or carbon-fiber trim for the dashboard, and several different seat types and upholsteries. The S trim comes with 19-inch wheels and drivers can opt for a lower ride height and torque vectoring. The GTS features the Sport Chrono package along with 20-inch wheels and a slightly lower ride height.
The Boxster hasn’t been crash tested, and it comes with few standard safety features, including a reversing camera.
The Boxster is an ideal weekend sports car. Properly equipped, it can also be a capable track-day toy. It competes with equally fun 2-seaters like the BMW Z4.
