Overview
The Honda Clarity Electric arrived in 2017 as an electric-vehicle (EV) lease option for residents of California and Oregon. It carries over for 2019.
While its tall wedge shape and wind-cheating creases are a departure from the ordinary, the Clarity Electric asks few sacrifices of its passengers. Like most other midsize sedans, there’s seating for as many as five people, and plenty of cubbies, floating panels, and glass to help it feel airy inside. Behind the standard 60/40 split-folding rear seats, you’ll find a decent 14.5 cubic feet of cargo space.
Honda bestows every Clarity Electric with a single electric motor and 25.5 kilowatt-hour battery that send 161 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque directly to the front wheels. Total range for this EV is a nominal 89 miles between recharges. It takes 19 hours to replenish the battery with the standard 120-volt SAE charger, though that shrinks to 3.5 hours on a 220V connection. DC charging can bring the Clarity Electric up to an 80-percent charge in 30 minutes. Official fuel economy ratings are 126 city miles-per-gallon equivalent (MPGe) city, 103 highway, and 114 combined.
You can lease the Clarity Electric in a single well-equipped trim. Standard features include leather upholstery, LED exterior lighting, 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless access and start, dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8-way power driver’s seat with memory, a 4-way power passenger’s seat, heated front seats, an 8-speaker 180-watt sound system, an 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite radio, and navigation. Honda also gives the Clarity Electric some remote smartphone-enabled features, like the ability to check the car’s charge state, find charging stations, and set the climate controls.
On the safety front, the Clarity Electric comes standard with a reversing camera, a right-side camera, and the Honda Sensing suite of driver-assist technologies, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist. The Clarity Electric hasn't been crash tested, but that’s not abnormal for low-volume EVs.
The Honda Clarity Electric continues to bet short-range-EV lease option for eligible residents of California and Oregon, competing with other EVs like the Chevy Bolt EV.
