CarGurus Analysis: 2018 GMC Terrain
overall

Summary
With 120 currently listed for sale near Boston, MA and an average price of $14,248.00, 35.0% of 2018 GMC Terrains for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 GMC Terrain 4.71 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.17 / 10.
75.8% of 2018 Terrain models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 GMC Terrain arrives with a conservatively redesigned look, but its appeal is undercut by the fact that it no longer has the rugged styling that once helped it stand out. It is a conceptually appealing compact crossover SUV, yet the overall impression is that it falls apart under scrutiny. The vehicle also does not meet safety expectations for a brand-new design, which makes it harder to recommend.
Even so, owners often describe the 2018 Terrain as comfortable and spacious, with a good variety of features available, especially in higher trim levels. Many also found it smooth and enjoyable to drive, particularly with the 2.0L turbo engine. At the same time, some reviewers raised concerns about brake sensitivity, a lack of power in certain situations, and pricing issues, which reinforces the sense that its strengths are balanced by notable drawbacks.

It’s the Denali so it has everything you need plus more. Only thing that would make it better would be a V6 but this 2.0 turbo has major get up and go.

The car is amazing and of great value. We purchased this vehicle for under the market value and it is in excellent condition. I did a thorough walk around and probably looked like an idiot looking for the smallest dents and scratches. The vehicle has great options, panoramic roof and good quality materials, especially for the price. What a steal my wife got!!!!

This car exceeded my highest expectations. Very nice ride, appropriate amount of room and has a very sporty feel. Has a lot of extra features that make it over all a very nice care. The push gear buttons will take some time to get use to but over all very very cool.

I like the car, but the brakes are a little sensitive and the pick-up (from a stop) can be jerky. Otherwise, it is smooth, comfortable, and a quiet ride.

How much does the 2018 GMC Terrain cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,364 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,336.62 |
| Year-Round High | $15,814.23 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,812 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.16% |
Prices have softened 9.16% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 1,896 listings available, you have a solid amount of inventory to compare across trims and conditions.
If you find a listing below $14,336.62, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 GMC Terrain a good car?
Yes — 4.71/5 owners rate it 4.71/5, and the expert rating is 6.17/10. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Form and function.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, spaciousness, and the variety of features available, especially in higher trim levels. Many also describe it as smooth and enjoyable to drive, particularly with the 2.0L turbo engine. In practical terms, that makes it appealing if you want a compact crossover SUV with a roomy cabin and a more upscale feature set in the right trim.
That said, the overall market picture is mixed, with 30.5% of listings classified as good or great deals.
Is the 2018 GMC Terrain reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a vehicle that many people found comfortable, spacious, and enjoyable over time, with a feature set that feels satisfying in daily use. It also highlights the 2.0L turbo engine as a smooth and enjoyable choice, which supports the impression that the Terrain can be a dependable companion when properly maintained.
The expert drive notes reinforce that sense of everyday usability, describing the Terrain as easy to guide and generally composed on the road. The cost-effectiveness commentary also notes that the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a good ownership experience depends heavily on condition and maintenance history, so you should be selective about the specific example you choose.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 GMC Terrain?
At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage or lower-priced example. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and whether the vehicle’s equipment and safety features work as expected. Because this model year has a mixed safety reputation, you’ll want to be especially careful about any signs of prior damage or incomplete repairs.

- Trim level: The base SL is stripped down compared with higher trims, and the cabin presentation improves as you move up the range. The Denali trim adds extra brightwork, a more upscale look, premium leather, and burnished aluminum trim.
- Powertrain: You get three engine choices: a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder gas engine, a turbocharged 1.6-liter diesel engine, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter gas engine. The 1.5-liter is described as adequate, while the 2.0-liter is the quicker and more satisfying choice.
- Safety package: Teen Driver technology and Rear Seat Reminder are standard. Other driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems are mostly optional, and adaptive cruise control plus higher-speed automatic emergency braking are missing.
- Infotainment: The system uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also offers OnStar subscription services with a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, navigation, an SD card reader, and four USB data ports. Wireless device charging is included on Denali.
- Fuel efficiency: The 1.5-liter engine returned 23.3 mpg in prior testing, while the 2.0-liter AWD test vehicle averaged 22.6 mpg.
Which 2018 GMC Terrain trim should I buy?
The 2018 GMC Terrain is offered in 4 trim levels: SL, SLE, SLT, and Denali.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SL is the most limited choice. It is FWD-only, comes only with the 1.5-liter engine, and is restricted to white, black, or silver paint.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SLE is the minimum realistic starting point if you want broader availability, but adding AWD and options quickly pushes the price up.
- Premium/top trim: Denali is the most appealing if you want the best interior presentation, the 2.0-liter engine, wireless charging, and the 7-speaker Bose premium sound system.
The safety-package note to keep in mind is that many driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems are optional rather than standard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 GMC Terrain?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile examples.
- Deal availability: 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,896 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.16% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,336.62, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 GMC Terrain's resale value?
The current average of $14,364 sits slightly below last year's $15,812.
That price movement suggests the Terrain has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you shop carefully now, you may have less downside left than a buyer who paid closer to the model’s earlier average. The flip side is that resale strength will still depend heavily on trim, condition, and whether the vehicle has a clean history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 GMC Terrain safe?
The 2018 Terrain gets a mediocre three-star rating for rear seat and side-impact protection, and an overall four-star rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.
Teen Driver technology is standard, letting parents set vehicle limits and review vehicle-use reports. Rear Seat Reminder is also standard, which is helpful if you regularly carry children or pets. Most other driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems are available only as options, and adaptive cruise control plus higher-speed automatic emergency braking are missing.
That rear-seat side-impact result is the key caution for used buyers, especially if family safety is a priority.
Should I buy a 2018 GMC Terrain or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.16% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It offers a redesigned look, a roomy cabin, and a strong feature set in higher trims.
The bottom line: If you want a used compact crossover with a comfortable cabin and you’re willing to shop carefully, the 2018 Terrain can make sense. If you’re especially price-sensitive, prioritize the cleanest, best-documented example you can find and be selective about trim and equipment.
