CarGurus Analysis: 2018 BMW M5

Summary
With 96 currently listed for sale and an average price of $47,184, 31.3% of 2018 BMW M5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 BMW M5 5 / 5 stars.
66.7% of 2018 M5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 BMW M5 stands out as the first M5 to use BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system, giving it added grip for performance and all-weather traction. It also marked the first use of electric steering in the model, and it paired a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with an eight-speed automatic transmission. BMW tuned the system for a rear-wheel power bias, and by turning off the dynamic stability control, the car could be driven as a rear-driver.
Performance is the main draw here: the 2018 M5 made 600 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, reached 60 mph in about 3.3 seconds, and could hit 190 mph with the M Driver’s Package. It also brought a practical side, with a four-door body and the kind of luxury and technology buyers expect from an M5. For shoppers, that combination of serious speed, usable traction, and everyday comfort is what makes this generation appealing.
There are a few tradeoffs. The electric steering was not well received, and the car’s high-performance nature means it still deserves careful attention if it has been neglected or modified. Even so, the 2018 BMW M5 remains distinctive for blending supercar-level acceleration with all-weather capability and modern luxury in a sedan body.

65,000 Miles later, I still give it 5 stars! Best family sports sedan money can buy! I have my M5 pushing 800Hp and 986TQ... Daily driven with 2 car seats in the back... it doesnt get better than that :) Standard maintenance done on time, never had a problem with the car!

The BMW F90 M5 is an amazing vehicle with both luxury and performance. It is a two in one vehicle, which is good as it costs as much as two vehicles. It is a challenge to remain within speed limit … with a simple touch of the pedal putting you in to triple digits in a hot second. It handles well, and shift from a relatively smooth and quiet prowl, to an outright ludicrous beast by pushing the M1 button. The technology in the M5 is top notch, and the new iDrive works very smoothly and intuitively. The menu preview in the screens is a great improvement. The B&W sound system is brilliant, and a must have option. In the past I felt the B&O system in the Audi S8 set the bar … but I now realize I was wrong. The CC brakes are powerful, and annoyingly loud when wet, but goes away after they dry. The full merino leather is wonderfully soft and smooth, but is sensitive to mar and dents - requiring more care.

How much does the 2018 BMW M5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $47,184 |
| Year-Round Low | $47,184 |
| Year-Round High | $49,075 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $48,864 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.44% |
Prices have softened 3.44% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 101 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2018 BMW M5 a good car?
Yes — the 2018 BMW M5 earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its outstanding performance, luxurious interior, and advanced technology, and many say it feels comfortable in daily driving while still delivering serious speed and agility. That makes it especially appealing if you want a high-performance luxury sedan that still works as an everyday car. With 30.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 BMW M5 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car that feels dependable in the ways that matter to enthusiasts, with repeated praise for its strong performance, comfort, and technology over time. That said, this is a high-performance sedan, so long-term ownership risk for used buyers still depends heavily on maintenance history and how carefully the car was driven and cared for.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 BMW M5?
At 66.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can confirm accident records, title status, and ownership history before you get too far into the process. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a performance car where prior neglect or modifications can matter more than mileage alone. Focus on overall condition, signs of hard use, and whether the car has been maintained consistently.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 BMW M5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 101 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.44% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $47,184, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 BMW M5's resale value?
The current average of $47,184 sits slightly below last year's $48,864.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to protect value through strong maintenance records and clean condition, since buyers in this segment tend to reward well-kept examples. A car that presents well and has a clear history should be easier to move when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 BMW M5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.44% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
If you want the first xDrive M5 with the blend of all-weather traction, supercar-level speed, and everyday usability, the 2018 is the right direction to focus on. If you are more price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years to see whether a cleaner or better-priced example gives you a better overall value, but the 2018 remains a compelling choice when condition and history check out.
