How much does the 2017 Volkswagen Golf R cost?

There are 139 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.

Is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf R a good car?

Yes — 5/5 is a strong user rating for this model year, and the expert rating is 7.83/10. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

The 2017 Golf R is built for you if you want a performance hatchback that still works as an everyday car. The overview emphasizes all-wheel drive, extra power, and a setup that can feel at home on a winding road or the highway, while the expert notes highlight its strong grip, adaptive suspension, and broad usability.

The market also shows 41.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf R reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The overview presents it as a do-nearly-anything hatchback, and the expert notes reinforce that it combines serious performance with everyday usability. The performance write-up also points to a strong chassis, confident braking, and a powertrain that delivers hard acceleration once the turbo is fully on boost.

The expert commentary also describes the DSG as smooth and quick, while noting that stop-and-go crawling is not its strong suit. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a high-performance hatchback can be more expensive to keep in top shape than a simpler compact car.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Volkswagen Golf R?

At 66.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a careful pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been driven hard or modified. Focus on body condition, signs of wear in the suspension and brakes, and whether the car’s equipment works as intended.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The standard setup adds the previously optional Driver Assistance Package, along with navigation and Dynamic Chassis Control, so you should confirm those features are present and functioning if you are comparing listings.
• Powertrain: The car uses an amped-up 2-liter turbocharged engine with strong acceleration, and the DSG dual-clutch transmission is quick but can feel less natural in slow traffic than the manual.
• Safety package: The standard Driver Assistance Package includes parking sensors front and rear, forward collision warning and intervention, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise, and auto high beams.
• Infotainment: Navigation is standard, and the tech package also includes the driver-assistance features above.
• Fuel efficiency: No fuel-economy figure is stated in the available data.

Which 2017 Volkswagen Golf R trim should I buy?

The 2017 Volkswagen Golf R is offered in 1 trim level: Dynamic Chassis Control with Navigation.

Here's the short version:

The Dynamic Chassis Control with Navigation trim is the one to buy because it bundles the equipment buyers now have to accept anyway, including the standard Driver Assistance Package, navigation, and adaptive suspension. It is the best fit if you want the full Golf R experience without hunting for a stripped-down version that was only available in very limited numbers.

The safety-package trim note is simple: the Driver Assistance Package is now standard, so you should make sure every listing includes the full suite of driver aids and not assume a cheaper configuration exists.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volkswagen Golf R?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you should shop carefully and compare listings rather than rushing.

• Deal availability: 41.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

What is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf R's resale value?

The current average of $23,033 sits slightly above last year's $22,579.

That upward move suggests the market has held up reasonably well for this model year. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you should have a decent chance of preserving value better than you would with a more ordinary hatchback.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf R safe?

The 2017 Volkswagen Golf R earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, despite receiving four-star ratings in the overall front and front passenger tests. It earns a Top Safety Pick from IIHS.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard Driver Assistance Package includes parking sensors front and rear, forward collision warning and intervention, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise, and auto high beams. The expert safety notes also point out that IIHS gave the car poor marks for headlight visibility to the sides, especially around corners.

Should I buy a 2017 Volkswagen Golf R or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 41.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 66.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 2.01% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The expert summary says the 2017 version now comes with the standard safety systems, navigation, and Dynamic Chassis Control, making it a more fully equipped Golf R than the limited-release base version.

The bottom line: The 2017 Golf R makes the most sense if you want the fully equipped version of this performance hatch and are comfortable paying for the added standard equipment. If you are more price-sensitive, you should still shop carefully for the best-condition example, because the market has enough inventory to compare but not so much that the cheapest car is automatically the best buy.
