Why it stands out
Think of the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack as a German Subaru Outback, but more fun to drive. That simple comparison captures its appeal: it blends wagon practicality with all-wheel drive and SUV styling cues, while aiming to be more engaging behind the wheel than the usual utility-focused alternative.
The formula is straightforward but effective. Volkswagen takes a station wagon, adds all-wheel drive and SUV styling cues, raises the suspension a bit, and uses that combination to solve a variety of daily driving requirements. The result is a vehicle that stands out for buyers who want usefulness without giving up a more enjoyable driving character.

Amazing traction, beautiful interior, good German engineering. Great value. Doesnt have sensors for cars getting too close or blind spot detection

For my purposes, the Golf Alltrack is a near perfect vehicle. It is not gross and large, yet its interior room is greater than many SUVs. The handling is responsive and sure. While there was no means of testing the Alltrack capabilities, I would assume that it would meet situations of snow with great aplomb. The acceleration and driving characteristics were excellent. Fit and finish both inside and out were equally superb. Unless you absolutely NEED an offroad vehicle (and exactly how often are you really going to use that offroad potential that you were seduced into buying?) I cannot imagine a better or more practical vehicle. The car is a good value. For those who want an automatic transmission, it is available. I would place the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack far ahead of the Subaru offerings in both handling, acceleration and fit and finish.

Hard to find an all wheel drive wagon with a manual transmission. A blast to drive.

Actually fun to drive. Steering firms up nicely in custom setting. Though it leans in the twisties it doesnt feel tippy, tracks through with virtually no understeer. Avoid ludicrous speed setting in custom. No mechanical issues. With the DSG transmission(SE & SEL), beats the snot out of the Outback. Avoid oem tires, probs with SE delaminating Continentals, Falkens are just terrible in all respects. once switched to Michelin Pilot A/S performance is way enhanced. VW killed the GOLF at least for US. Im certain the make more $ on the Tiguan, which is the entry soccer mom model. May buy another to keep in CO. For us (both the SE & SEL-yup two) we have keepers ie 125-50k.

How much does the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $13,142 |
| Year-Round Low | $12,898 |
| Year-Round High | $13,809 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,725 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.25% |
Prices have softened 4.25% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 187 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its handling, comfortable interior, and fun driving experience. The all-wheel drive setup and available manual transmission also come through as recurring positives, and the overview makes clear why it appeals if you want wagon practicality with a more engaging driving character than a typical utility-focused alternative.
With 36.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a strong-value example if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers highlighting the car’s all-wheel drive capability and enjoyable everyday usability.
The expert review reinforces that sense of confidence by describing the Alltrack as tried and true, and by emphasizing its practical, proven formula. It also notes that Volkswagen includes a first scheduled maintenance visit on the house, which helps soften early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that Volkswagen reliability can vary, so a clean service history matters as much as the car’s appealing driving character.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack?
At 65.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has seen winter use, rough roads, or any signs of underbody contact. Pay close attention to tire condition, suspension wear, and any evidence that the car has been driven harder than its wagon-like mission suggests.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S is the base model and starts with the core AWD setup, hill-descent control, off-road driving mode, and raised ride height, while the SE adds a panoramic sunroof, premium sound system, keyless entry with push-button start, and rain-sensing wipers. The SEL brings the most comprehensive infotainment system, power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and larger 18-inch wheels.
- Powertrain: The Alltrack uses a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with 170 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque. The DSG automated manual is available, and the manual transmission is part of the appeal if you want a more engaging drive.
- Safety package: Adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking are offered on all versions. The SEL is also the only trim with lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist. Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are unavailable.
- Infotainment: The SEL’s Discover Media system includes smartphone projection, satellite radio, data services, Car-Net apps and subscription services, and navigation. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, and the SEL can also be equipped with adaptive LED headlights, Park Pilot sensors, and Park Assist through the Driver Assistance and Lighting Package.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert review says the Alltrack returned 24.8 mpg on a testing loop and averaged 26 mpg over a week, while the EPA figure cited in the review is 25 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack trim should I buy?
The 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack is offered in 3 trim levels: Alltrack S, Alltrack SE, Alltrack SEL.
Here's the short version:
- Alltrack S: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the core Alltrack formula: AWD, hill-descent control, off-road driving mode, and the raised suspension. It makes sense if you want the least expensive way into the model and are comfortable with a simpler feature set.
- Alltrack SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the panoramic sunroof, premium audio, keyless entry with push-button start, and rain-sensing wipers without jumping all the way to the top model. It also gets the Fender premium audio system.
- Alltrack SEL: This is the most fully equipped version, with the best infotainment setup, power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and larger 18-inch wheels. If you want the most comfort and tech, this is the one to target.
The SEL is also the only trim with lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, while blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are unavailable across the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 36.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 187 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.25% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,898, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack's resale value?
The current average of $13,142 sits slightly below last year's $13,725.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to stay competitive on condition and mileage. If you buy well now and keep the car clean and well documented, you should be in a better position to protect value later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack safe?
The 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack earns top scores from the federal government and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen equips the Alltrack with automatic post-collision braking, and Car-Net’s Security and Service package adds automatic collision notification, SOS emergency calling, and Family Guardian speed and boundary alerts. Adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking are offered on all versions, while the SEL alone gets lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist.
A key caveat is that blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are unavailable, so you may want to be especially careful when checking lane changes and backing out of tight spaces.

- At 65.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 stands out for its wagon practicality, all-wheel drive, and fun-to-drive character, while still offering top expert marks for look and feel.
The bottom line: If you want the Alltrack’s best mix of value, personality, and everyday usefulness, the 2017 is a strong place to start. Price-sensitive buyers should focus on clean, well-maintained examples with the right equipment, while shoppers who want the most features should look for a well-kept SEL or a carefully optioned SE.
