CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Toyota 4Runner

Summary
With 144 currently listed for sale near Raleigh, NC and an average price of $25,673.00, 18.1% of 2017 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Toyota 4Runner 4.5 / 5 stars.
70.1% of 2017 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a body-on-frame midsize SUV that stayed true to its off-road roots while many rivals moved toward car-based designs. In its generation, Toyota kept the 4Runner focused on durability and capability, and the model’s appeal comes from that combination of rugged construction, strong resale value, and a reputation for reliability. It is also one of the few SUVs in its class that still feels purpose-built for rough terrain rather than softened into a crossover.
For 2017, the 4Runner’s lineup included the SR5, the Trail, and the Limited, with rear-wheel drive standard on the SR5 and Limited and four-wheel drive available. The Trail trim was only available with four-wheel drive. Standard equipment across the generation included power windows and door locks, a multi-information display, and 10 cup holders, while available features included XM Satellite Radio, Bluetooth, a JBL audio system, leather seats, and heated front seats. The Trail trim added an electronic locking rear differential, Crawl Control, and a Multi-Terrain Select system, which helped reinforce the 4Runner’s off-road identity.
At the same time, the 2017 4Runner was not trying to be the most modern or polished SUV on the road. Its on-road handling is a known weakness, and fuel economy is another drawback. Still, for buyers who value toughness, long-term dependability, and genuine all-terrain ability, the 2017 Toyota 4Runner offers a distinctive mix that few used SUVs can match.

I thought this was a very solid purchase. Ive owned the vehicle for about 5 years and have been happy with the purchase. My only complaint is that I thought the sound system could have been a little better. It was still good but I like to listen to my music loud so it would most likely be satisfactory for most people

4Runner is the last of the real SUV’s….in a world flooded with cutesy crossovers and bloated luxury barges, the 4Runner stands alone as a rugged, do it all vehicle. Simplicity and quality will always outshine “tech” and disposability.

| Year-Round High | $27,879.60 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $27,823 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.47% |
Prices have softened 2.47% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,545 listings available, which suggests you have meaningful inventory to compare across trims and conditions.
If you find a listing below $25,718.17, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.5/5, which points to strong overall satisfaction. Reviewers consistently praise its reliability, ruggedness, and long-lasting value, and they also highlight its solid construction and off-road capability. For you, that makes it a strong fit if you want a dependable SUV with adventure-ready character rather than a city-first crossover. With 30.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback emphasizes reliability, ruggedness, and long-lasting value, with several comments pointing to a vehicle you can count on over time. That kind of reputation matters if you plan to keep your SUV for years and want something built for durable ownership. For used buyers, the main risk is paying for a well-known reputation without confirming the individual vehicle's condition and history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota 4Runner?
At 58.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Put inspection priority on body condition, frame-related concerns, and signs of uneven wear that could point to harder use. Because this model is often chosen for rugged driving, you should focus on how the specific vehicle was maintained rather than relying on the badge alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,545 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.47% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $25,718.17, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $27,135 sits slightly below last year's $27,823.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. If you plan to sell later, the current pricing trend implies you may not see rapid appreciation, so condition and mileage will matter a lot when it is time to list. Strong demand for this model can still support resale, especially if you keep it clean and well documented.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.47% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $24,504, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $27,135 average.
- It emphasizes off-road capability and ruggedness.
The bottom line: If you want the newer year with strong owner satisfaction and a market that still offers deal opportunities, the 2017 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2016 is the more price-conscious path and still keeps you in the same rugged 4Runner formula.
