CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Subaru Outback

Summary
With 120 currently listed for sale near Jacksonville, FL and an average price of $15,770, 16.7% of 2017 Subaru Outbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru Outback 4.65 / 5 stars.
92.5% of 2017 Outback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru Outback stands out as a practical, roomy wagon-crossover with standard all-wheel drive and a reputation for capability in rough weather and light off-road use. By this generation, Subaru had moved the Outback firmly toward crossover territory, and the model’s appeal came from combining everyday usefulness with the brand’s long-running AWD identity. It was also known for a comfortable, capacious cabin and a generally quieter, more refined feel than earlier versions.
For 2017, the Outback’s cabin tech was a step up from the basics, with a standard 6.5-inch infotainment screen on lower trims and an optional 8-inch unit on higher trims. That year also brought Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to the larger screen, along with Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist suite on upper trims. Buyers looking at this model year could also appreciate the Outback’s strong safety reputation and the added convenience of features such as adaptive cruise control on equipped versions.
There are tradeoffs, though. The droney CVT can feel uninspiring on the highway, and the Outback still does not return the best fuel mileage. Some owners also find the 2.5-liter engine underpowered, and long-term maintenance can be costlier than on some rivals. Even so, the 2017 Subaru Outback remains appealing for shoppers who want all-weather confidence, a roomy interior, and a well-rounded used vehicle with a lot of practical value.

I love this car. The exterior is beautiful, and the interior looks $10k above its class. I’m changing all of the interior lights to led because the yellow incandescent glow looks out of place. Some of the included features, like lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring, seem unnecessary, but probably welcome inclusions for someone with less than stellar driving. Overall, 8/10. I will definitely be keeping it until repairs become too expensive.

Good solid car to replace Hyundai Santa Fe that was totaled from Hurricane Helene. The 4 cylinder is peppy and for the first tank, getting great gas mileage. It will be easier on the wallet and goes farther on an 18 gallon tank than the Santa Fe.

I believe that the car has many nice features to enjoy, but will have to learn and acquire the knowledge as how to use these features as time permits. I want to be better and more comfortable knowing where everything is after driving Hondas for more than 30 years, this is my 1st Subaru

Excellent car,it has the 3.6 in it,It tows my trailers effortlessly. Its incredible in the snow.We have had an Impreza, and 2 Foresters, all have been excellent, but the Outback is by far our favorite. Other than oil changes tires and brakes repairs have been limited to wheel bearing on the Impreza, after 16 years of owning it.One of the best cars around in my opinion, and Ive been a mechanic since 1976

Is the 2017 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 4.65/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the safety features, spacious interior, reliability, comfortable ride, and AWD capability. That makes sense if you want a practical, roomy vehicle for everyday driving, rough weather, or light off-road use. With 32.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have a decent chance of finding attractive pricing.
Is the 2017 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.65/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback highlights reliability alongside comfort, AWD capability, and confidence in a variety of driving conditions. That combination suggests the Outback has earned trust from people who live with it day to day, not just on paper. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure prior use and maintenance history line up with the vehicle’s condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Outback?
At 65.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with past damage. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually strong or the mileage is high. Focus on overall condition, repair quality, and signs of wear that could affect long-term ownership costs.

What is the 2017 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $14,367 sits slightly below last year's $15,005.
That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also means future resale gains may be limited unless you choose a well-kept example. If you plan to sell later, condition and documentation will matter a lot because the market is already pricing this model year below where it was a year ago. Strong demand for practical, all-weather vehicles should still help support interest from future shoppers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.65/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.65/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,894, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,367 average.
- It emphasizes active-lifestyle practicality and cargo-friendly versatility.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $15,943, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $14,367 average.
- It adds a more polished take on safety, ride quality, and everyday capability.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the best all-around choice if you want a strong mix of owner satisfaction, pricing, and broad usefulness. If your priority is spending less, the 2016 is the better value path; if you want to stretch for a newer option, the 2018 is the natural upgrade.
