Is the 2017 Subaru Outback a good car?

Yes — the 2017 Subaru Outback earns a 4.65/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its safety features, spacious interior, reliability, comfortable ride, and AWD capability. That makes it a strong fit if you want a practical, roomy vehicle for everyday driving, rough weather, or light off-road use. Is the 2017 Subaru Outback reliable?

Owners rate it 4.65/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback also emphasizes reliability, along with dependable AWD performance and a vehicle that many drivers feel confident keeping for the long haul. That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition, since long-term ownership costs can vary by example.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Outback?

At 65.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on body condition, signs of prior collision repair, and how well the cabin and mechanical components have been maintained. If a listing looks especially clean, make sure the condition matches the paperwork and the inspection results.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Outback?

This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting every listing to be a bargain.

• Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,067 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.06% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 65.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,034, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Subaru Outback's resale value?

The current average of $14,309 sits slightly below last year's $14,915.

That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable entry point, but it also suggests resale upside may be more measured than in a rising market. If you plan to sell later, condition and maintenance history will matter a lot, especially because buyers tend to reward clean examples with strong documentation. A well-kept Outback should still hold appeal thanks to its practical layout and broad usefulness.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.65/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 65.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.06% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.65/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $12,548, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,309 average.
• It emphasizes active-lifestyle practicality and cargo-friendly versatility.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $15,827, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $14,309 average.
• It adds a more refined balance of driving dynamics, fuel economy, and ground clearance.

The bottom line: The 2017 is the best all-around pick if you want strong owner satisfaction, broad usefulness, and a market with meaningful deal availability. If your priority is lower upfront cost, the 2016 is the better value path; if you want to spend more for a newer-feeling alternative, the 2018 is worth a look.
