Is the 2017 Subaru Outback reliable?

Owners rate it 4.65/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the basic formula and more about finding a well-kept example with consistent maintenance and no hidden wear.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Outback?

At 65.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, especially if a listing looks unusually well priced. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can check for body repairs, suspension issues, and signs of uneven wear. Focus closely on overall condition, because the best buy is usually the one with clean history, solid maintenance, and no surprises.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Outback?

This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep buyer’s market.

• Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,107 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.53% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 65.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,033, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Subaru Outback's resale value?

The current average of $14,265 sits slightly below last year's $14,787.

That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means future resale gains may be limited if the market stays steady. If you plan to sell later, the Outback’s value will likely depend on how well you preserve condition, mileage, and service history. Strong demand for practical, well-liked models can help support pricing, but you should still expect resale to track broader market movement.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.65/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 65.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.53% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.65/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $12,337, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,265 average.
• It emphasizes practical adventure-ready versatility.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $15,806, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $14,265 average.
• It adds a straightforward, safety-minded appeal.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, owner satisfaction, and available inventory, the 2017 is the strongest starting point. If your priority is spending less, the 2016 is the better value play; if you’re willing to pay more for a newer-year alternative, the 2018 is worth a look.
