CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Summary
With 113 currently listed for sale near Tacoma, WA and an average price of $36,435.00, 31.0% of 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Classes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 4.9 / 5 stars.
53.1% of 2017 S-Class models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out because it sits at the center of Mercedes-Benz’s flagship tradition: a large luxury car built to showcase the brand’s best technology, craftsmanship, and safety. In this generation, Mercedes gave the car the second generation of its MBUX infotainment interface, and buyers could opt for up to five screens on board. Mercedes also said there was a new 3D driver display system that uses eye tracking to create the illusion of depth. That emphasis on advanced features is part of what makes the S-Class distinctive, and it helps explain why the model has long been regarded as a benchmark in its class.
For 2017, the W222 series received a facelift and tech update, and the engines were updated for 2018. The W222 also brought a new aluminum hybrid body shell that significantly cut weight and improved rigidity, along with a surround-view camera system that integrated multi-modal radar and ultrasonic sensors for smoother adaptive cruise control and lane centering. Its interior used wood and metal accents, selectable ambient lighting, and a pair of giant 12.3-inch screens under a single panel, while many physical controls were retained. That mix of luxury and usability gives the car broad appeal, especially for buyers who want a cabin that feels both opulent and thoughtfully engineered.
There are tradeoffs, though. The S-Class is expensive to buy new, and it is costly to fuel, maintain, and insure over time. Even so, the W222 has a very good reliability record, and owner reports often describe an easy ownership experience with high satisfaction. For shoppers drawn to a used luxury sedan that combines comfort, technology, and strong long-term appeal, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class remains a compelling choice.

The car and its value are outstanding. In my opinion, you can't compare this car to others; it's in a class all by itself.

The car has every option I was looking for even the omission of HUD. I think at its original price point it is a great value. The car has a color that I have yet to figure out but other than that Im totally satisfied with my purchase. I had a Porsche Panamera 4S but Im getting older and more mature plus everyone should own an S Class once in life.

See more price trendsHow much does the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $38,756 |
| Year-Round Low | $38,526.44 |
| Year-Round High | $40,747.41 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $40,044 |

Prices have softened 3.22% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 736 listings available, which gives you a meaningful pool to compare prices and equipment.
If you find a listing below $38,526.44, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns a 4.9/5 user rating, which points to very strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its elegant design, driving experience, performance, safety, and comfort. That makes it especially appealing if you want a flagship luxury sedan that feels polished, refined, and well suited to buyers who value a high-end cabin and smooth road manners. With 32.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback describes it as a dependable choice, and the review summary also points to a trouble-free, easy ownership experience for many buyers. The same feedback highlights its strong long-term appeal, which matters if you want a used luxury sedan you can count on over time. For used buyers, the main risk is less about the model’s reputation and more about how well a specific example has been maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
At 58.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage or repeated claims. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a luxury sedan where repair costs can escalate quickly if something has been neglected. Focus your attention on overall condition, service records, and how well the car’s comfort and technology features are working, since those are central to the ownership experience.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile opportunities.
- Deal availability: 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 736 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.22% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $38,526.44, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $38,756 sits slightly below last year's $40,044.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to compete more on condition, mileage, and equipment. If you buy well and keep the car in strong shape, you can help protect your position when it comes time to resell. Strong owner satisfaction also supports demand, which can help a luxury sedan hold attention in the used market.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.22% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: You should start with the 2017 if you want a well-liked flagship luxury sedan and you’re willing to shop carefully for condition and history. If you’re especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2017 stands out as a strong choice when you find a clean, well-priced example.
