How much does the 2017 Kia Sportage cost?

Prices have softened 3.13% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,005 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2017 Kia Sportage a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 4.82/5 user-rated SUV with an expert rating of 7.83/10. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise the comfort, handling, and value, and they also call out features like the panoramic sunroof and safety technology. That lines up well with the Sportage’s use case as a compact crossover that aims to be practical without feeling plain. You also get a model that’s meant to feel more distinctive than the average family hauler, which helps if you want something with personality as well as everyday usefulness.

Good and great deals account for 30.3% of listings, so you have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.

Is the 2017 Kia Sportage reliable?

Owners rate it 4.82/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to reliability, good value compared with other brands, and a generally trouble-free ownership experience. The expert evaluation also emphasizes peace of mind through the Sportage’s long warranty coverage, which supports the case for dependable ownership. Kia’s powertrain warranty is especially generous for this class, and that can help reduce long-term ownership anxiety if you’re buying used.

For a used buyer, the main risk is less about the model’s reputation and more about how well a specific example was maintained and driven.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Sportage?

At 61.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment and safety features work as expected. Because this model year can show up with prior damage, the condition of the specific vehicle matters more than the badge on the tailgate.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LX is the entry point, while the EX adds more equipment and the SX Turbo brings the strongest performance and the most upscale feel. The base trim is the one most likely to leave you wanting more, especially if you care about convenience and tech.
• Powertrain: The LX and EX use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 181 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque, while the SX Turbo uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 240 horsepower in front-wheel-drive form and 237 horsepower with all-wheel drive. The base engine is the efficiency-first choice, while the turbo is the one to seek if you want stronger acceleration.
• Safety package: The Sportage includes front and side impact airbags, traction control, a reversing camera, LATCH anchors, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning and avoidance. You can’t get adaptive cruise control, and the high-tech safety features aren’t available on the base model.
• Infotainment: The base touchscreen is 5 inches, with 7- and 8-inch screens available. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are optional on the LX and standard on the EX and SX Turbo, and UVO eServices adds connected features such as a parking-location reminder and roadside assistance.
• Fuel efficiency: The base engine is rated at 23 mpg city, 30 highway, and 26 combined with front-wheel drive, or 21 city, 25 highway, and 22 combined with all-wheel drive. The turbo engine is rated at 21 city, 26 highway, and 23 combined with front-wheel drive, or 20 city, 23 highway, and 21 combined with all-wheel drive.

Which 2017 Kia Sportage trim should I buy?

The 2017 Kia Sportage is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, EX, and SX Turbo.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and can live with the most basic equipment. It gets the core Sportage experience, but you give up the richer tech and safety content that make the higher trims easier to recommend.
• EX: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more of the features that make the Sportage feel well equipped, including standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If you want a balanced used crossover without stretching to the top trim, this is the one to target.
• SX Turbo: This is the trim to buy if you want the strongest performance and the most fully loaded feel. It pairs the turbocharged engine with the most premium equipment in the lineup, so it makes sense if you care more about power and features than keeping the purchase price down.

The safety-tech features are not available on the base model, so if those matter to you, focus on EX or SX Turbo.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Sportage?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,005 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.13% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 61.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,097, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Kia Sportage's resale value?

The current average of $11,160 sits slightly below last year's $11,521.

That tells you the market has moved down a bit, which can make the Sportage easier to buy now but may also limit upside if you’re planning to resell soon. If you’re a future seller, the good news is that the decline has been modest rather than dramatic, so the model still appears to hold a fairly stable used-market position. Strong condition and a clean history should matter a lot when it comes time to list it again.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.82/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Kia Sportage safe?

The 2017 Kia Sportage is an IIHS 2017 Top Safety Pick. It earns Good scores in all phases of crash testing, a Superior score for crash-avoidance tech, an Acceptable score for LATCH ease of use, and a Poor score for headlight testing. It earns a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The Sportage includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning and avoidance, a reversing camera, and the usual airbag and traction-control coverage. One important caveat is that the high-tech safety features aren’t available on the base model, and adaptive cruise control isn’t offered at all.

Should I buy a 2017 Kia Sportage or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.13% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.82/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 model year combines bold styling, a sporty ride, and strong value with useful tech and safety features.

The bottom line: If you want a used Sportage with a strong mix of value, features, and owner satisfaction, the 2017 is the one to focus on. If your priority is simply finding the lowest possible price, you can also compare nearby years and let condition, mileage, and accident history decide the winner.
