CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee
overall

Summary
With 317 currently listed for sale near Kansas City, MO and an average price of $16,150, 25.6% of 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokees for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.77 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.
75.4% of 2017 Grand Cherokee models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee stands out for trying to cover two very different roles at once. Jeep’s own description of the lineup says it is broad enough to encompass luxury as well as the rugged capabilities the brand is known for, and the Grand Cherokee is presented as the on-road/off-road range-topping vehicle in Jeep’s lineup. That combination gives it a distinctive appeal for buyers who want an SUV that can feel upscale without giving up the brand’s off-road identity.
It also carries a personality that goes beyond the comparison Jeep management once used to describe it. The source notes that the Grand Cherokee has charm beyond English sensibilities, and points to the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk as proof of that character. In owner feedback, the 2017 model is praised for its comfortable ride, spacious interior, luxury features, performance, safety, and towing capabilities, which reinforces its broad appeal.
There are tradeoffs, though. Some reviewers mention concerns about gas mileage and the quality of interior materials, and a few felt those details did not fully match the vehicle’s price range. Even so, the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee remains distinctive because it blends comfort, capability, and a more premium feel in a way that few SUVs try to balance.

I am currently buying my second Grand Cherokee, it’s a fantastic vehicle! Only sold my first one because I moved to Chicago and had no need for a vehicle. It drives great, very quiet road noise, and super comfortable. Both of my GC’s are the Altitude trim and the suede and leather combo is so nice. I also love the infotainment system, great layout, simple and everything is sturdy. Nothing feels cheap in this vehicle!

Is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee earns a 4.77/5 user rating and an 8.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable ride, spacious interior, and luxury features, and they also call out its performance, safety, and towing capability. That lines up with the Grand Cherokee’s role as a vehicle that tries to balance upscale comfort with Jeep’s rugged identity, so you get a broad-appeal SUV rather than a one-note utility vehicle.
Good and great deals account for 31.1% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee reliable?
Owners rate it 4.77/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a vehicle people feel good about living with over time, especially because they repeatedly mention comfort, capability, and overall satisfaction. The expert evaluation also emphasizes Jeep’s long-running cachet and the Grand Cherokee’s well-rounded character, which supports the idea that it is built to be counted on for more than just short-term appeal.
The main ownership risk for used buyers is that some examples may have seen hard use, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
At 61.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because this model is often chosen for comfort, towing, and capability, it makes sense to focus on how well the cabin, suspension, and drivetrain have held up in real use. If a listing looks especially well equipped, make sure the added features still work as intended.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Laredo is the base trim and comes with fog lights, halogen quad headlights, 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, dual-zone automatic temperature control, a USB port, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. The Limited adds leather seating, power-adjustable front seats, heated front and second-row seats, 18-inch polished wheels, and a body-colored front fascia with bright insert. The Overland adds LED fog lights, automatic high beams, a dual-pane panoramic moonroof, 20-inch polished aluminum wheels, rain-sensing wipers, perforated Nappa leather, and the 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen. The Summit adds headlight washers, unique 20-inch wheels, chrome inserts, LED fog lamps, and an exclusive fascia design. The Trailhawk stands apart with 18-inch wheels on all-terrain tires, skid plates, a matte black hood, and red tow hooks.
- Powertrain: The base engine is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with 293 horsepower and an 8-speed automatic transmission. You can also get a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with 360 horsepower or a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 with 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is available, along with multiple 4-wheel-drive systems.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes front and side impact airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, and a reversing camera. Available features include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and self-parking.
- Infotainment: The base system is the Uconnect 5.0 touchscreen on the Laredo and Limited. The Trailhawk, Overland, and Summit get the larger 8.4-inch Uconnect screen. The base stereo is a 6-speaker unit, while the Trailhawk and Overland get a 506-watt Alpine premium audio system with 9 speakers and a subwoofer, and the Summit offers an 825-watt Harman Kardon system with 19 speakers.
- Fuel efficiency: Some reviewers mention concerns about gas mileage, but no MPG figure is stated here.
Which 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee trim should I buy?
The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in 6 trim levels: Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Summit, SRT performance trims.
Here's the short version:
- Laredo: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Grand Cherokee experience at the lowest starting price. It makes sense if you want the model’s comfort and capability without paying for luxury extras.
- Limited: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds leather seating, heated front and second-row seats, and power-adjustable front seats without jumping all the way to the upper luxury trims.
- Overland: This is the step-up choice if you want a more premium cabin, the larger 8.4-inch Uconnect screen, and features like a panoramic moonroof and Nappa leather.
- Summit: This is the luxury-focused pick, with the most upscale audio system, unique exterior details, and the richest feature set in the lineup.
- SRT performance trims: This is the choice if you want the performance-oriented version of the Grand Cherokee lineup.
The safety content notes that the Grand Cherokee can be equipped with forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and self-parking.

What is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee's resale value?
The current average of $14,438 sits slightly below last year's $15,871.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more affordably now. Well-kept examples with desirable trims and strong feature content should hold up better than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.77/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.03% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.77/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert summary highlights the Grand Cherokee’s blend of off-road capability, upscale interiors, and broad appeal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $13,212, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,438 average.
- It appeals to buyers who want strong towing, off-pavement ability, and Jeep styling.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, owner satisfaction, and current inventory, the 2017 is the better starting point. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly alternative, especially if you find a clean example with the right equipment.
