CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Honda HR-V

Summary
With 979 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,520, 33.6% of 2017 Honda HR-V listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Honda HR-V 4.4 / 5 stars.
55.5% of 2017 Honda HR-V listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Honda HR-V stands out as a practical subcompact crossover that blends SUV-style versatility with the easygoing footprint of a small car. It was part of the first-generation US HR-V, which used a 1.8-liter four-cylinder powertrain with 141 hp and a CVT automatic transmission designed more for fuel economy than performance. That setup helped make the HR-V appealing to buyers who wanted efficiency, everyday usability, and a higher driving position without moving up to a larger SUV.
What made the 2017 model especially distinctive was its Magic Seat system, which allowed the rear seats to fold in multiple ways for different seating and cargo needs. It also offered 58.8 cubic feet of cargo space, a strong figure for the class. The HR-V’s trim range gave shoppers some flexibility too, with available features such as automatic climate control, lane-departure warning, leather-trimmed seats, and different audio systems depending on trim. Owners also tended to value its smooth driving feel and overall value for money.
There were some drawbacks to keep in mind, though. Early HR-Vs were criticized for a clunky infotainment system, and some owners reported CVT-related problems, especially when accelerating hard. The 2017 model also lacked the updated infotainment and safety improvements that arrived later, so it is best suited to buyers who prioritize practicality, reliability reputation, and space over strong acceleration or the latest tech.

This could be a great value but this model has transmission issues and I was told it wouldn’t be covered because of the salvage title.

I love my Honda and it is a great value. My car is only missing air/heat vents in the back on the vehicle.

I love this car and ended up buying it because of it being such a smooth vehicle to drive with touch screen controls, heated seats, and a sunroof. Over all just a nice, clean, little SUV!

There is no extra storage space. Given the fact that it is the smallest of the SUV lineup for Honda but top of the line in the package, I guess I expected more.

Is the 2017 Honda HR-V a good car?
Generally — the 4.4/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners commonly praise the smooth driving experience, value for money, and useful features like the touch screen controls, heated seats, and sunroof. The HR-V’s practical use case is clear: you’re getting a subcompact crossover with SUV versatility, a clever interior, and everyday usability in a city-friendly footprint. With 33.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Honda HR-V reliable?
Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to reliability as a major draw, with many drivers describing the HR-V as dependable and trouble-free over time. That said, some owners reported transmission concerns, so you should treat condition and maintenance history as important parts of the decision.
For used buyers, the long-term ownership risk looks manageable if you choose carefully and avoid examples with unresolved drivetrain issues.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Honda HR-V?
At 54.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection on any car that looks especially clean on paper. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and how the transmission behaves during a test drive. Because some owners reported transmission concerns, you’ll want to pay close attention to smoothness under acceleration and any hesitation or shuddering.

What is the 2017 Honda HR-V's resale value?
The current average of $14,720 sits slightly above last year's $14,549.
That modest increase suggests the HR-V has held value reasonably well, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. A stable price trend usually helps support resale confidence, especially when the model continues to attract practical-minded shoppers. The combination of steady demand and a useful crossover format should help keep interest broad in the used market.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Honda HR-V or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.18% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $13,724, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,720 average.
- It offers value-focused practicality with strong owner praise for smoothness and reliability.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $15,953, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $14,720 average.
- It adds a more premium cabin and broader everyday appeal.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the right pick if you want a well-liked, practical HR-V with solid owner satisfaction and a fair market price. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2016 is the better value play; if you want a newer-feeling cabin and can spend more, the 2018 is worth a look.
