CarGurus Analysis: 2017 GMC Terrain

Summary
With 1,383 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,298.00, 28.9% of 2017 GMC Terrains for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 GMC Terrain 4.33 / 5 stars.
61.0% of 2017 Terrain models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 GMC Terrain stands out as a compact SUV that leans more toward comfort and everyday usability than flash. It offers a roomy cabin, and the buying guide notes that the first-generation Terrain was available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that produced 301 horsepower, making it the version recommended for shoppers considering this generation. The same guide also points out that the 2013 GMC Terrain was the first version offered in Denali trim, with a large chrome grille and extra luxury features inside, which helps explain the model’s more upscale personality.
For buyers, the Terrain’s appeal is its combination of a quiet, comfortable ride and practical space, which owners also praise. It is also a relatively attractive used buy because the model does not hold its value as well as some best-selling small SUVs, so prices can be appealing. At the same time, the 2017 Terrain has clear drawbacks: the guide warns against the four-cylinder and 3.0-liter V6 engines because of reliability concerns, and it notes that cargo space is not as generous as top rivals.

Yeah ... it was a good value for the milage. My only complaint is that our car has this foul smell of freshly changed baby diapers even after taking it to car wash for detailed cleaning.

I compare my 2017 Terrain Denali to my sister's Cadillac. It rides just as nice, and has many of the same features. I'm very pleased.

| Year-Round High | $11,772.23 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,762 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.61% |
Prices have softened 3.61% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,408 listings available, which suggests you should have some room to compare options.
If you find a listing below $11,030.09, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 GMC Terrain a good car?
Generally — the 2017 GMC Terrain earns a 4.33/5 user rating, which points to solid owner satisfaction. Owners most often praise its comfortable ride, spacious interior, and quiet cabin, and many also like its smooth handling and attractive design. For you, that makes it a sensible pick if you want a compact SUV focused on everyday comfort and practical space rather than flash. With 26.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 GMC Terrain reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback also points to a comfortable, quiet, and dependable-feeling daily driver, with many shoppers describing the Terrain as smooth and easy to live with over time. That said, the same ownership experience is tempered by concerns about engine performance in some versions, so long-term ownership risk is best managed by choosing carefully and verifying condition before you buy.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 GMC Terrain?
At 60.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage or repeated claims. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on body condition, signs of repair, and overall mechanical health. Because this model year has a mixed used-car pool, the best buys are usually the ones with clean records and consistent maintenance.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 GMC Terrain?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 26.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,408 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.61% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,030.09, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 GMC Terrain's resale value?
The current average of $11,337 sits slightly below last year's $11,762.
That softer pricing suggests the Terrain is still positioned as an accessible used SUV, which can help you buy in at a reasonable level today. For a future seller, the same affordability can support demand from shoppers who want comfort and space without paying top-tier crossover prices. The downside is that weaker price retention can limit upside if you plan to resell soon.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 GMC Terrain or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 26.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.61% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $14,265, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $11,337 average.
- It brings a conservatively redesigned look with a broader feature set in higher trims.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2017 is the stronger starting point because it costs less and still has solid owner approval. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2018 is the secondary path, but it makes more sense only if you specifically want the updated design and are comfortable paying the premium.
