Is the 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD a good car?

Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the overview backs that up with a clear focus on heavy-duty capability, a more polished cabin than earlier versions, and broad configuration choices for different jobs. Is the 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The overview describes a truck designed around serious capability, with a refined interior for the segment and a heavy-duty mission that prioritizes towing and hauling strength. For used buyers, that means reliability concerns are less about everyday commuting comfort and more about whether the truck has been maintained well for demanding work.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD?

At 68.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on frame condition, signs of hard use, and evidence of towing or hauling stress. Pay close attention to overall wear, because a heavy-duty truck can look clean while still carrying the effects of a tough working life.

What is the 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD's resale value?

The current average of $38,664 sits slightly below last year's $41,408.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled enough to give you a better entry point now, but it also means future resale gains may be more gradual unless demand strengthens. If you buy well and keep the truck in strong condition, you should be better positioned to preserve value when it’s time to sell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 68.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.63% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.

The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2017 if you want a heavy-duty truck with strong owner satisfaction, a softer price than a year ago, and enough inventory to compare options carefully. If you’re especially price-sensitive, a nearby model year may be worth considering, but the 2017 is the better starting point when you want a balanced mix of value, demand, and confidence in the market.
