How much does the 2017 Ford Explorer cost?

Prices have softened 6.44% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 5,245 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2017 Ford Explorer a good car?

Yes — the 2017 Ford Explorer earns a 4.8/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its smooth ride, spacious interior, and impressive features, and many also like its power and handling, especially with the EcoBoost engine. For you, that means this model year fits well if you want a family-friendly midsize SUV with useful space and a comfortable daily-driving feel. With 31.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is also a meaningful chance to find a competitively priced example.

Is the 2017 Ford Explorer reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback highlights a dependable-feeling driving experience, with owners often calling out the smooth ride and strong performance as reasons they keep coming back to it. That said, the broader model-year reputation is only average or below average for reliability, so a careful inspection matters if you want to reduce long-term ownership risk.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford Explorer?

At 65.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

Start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with prior damage. Then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially on the body, suspension, and any features that should operate smoothly. You should also focus on overall condition and maintenance records, since a well-kept example is the best way to lower your risk.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Ford Explorer?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right listing.

• Deal availability: 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 5,245 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.44% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 65.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $13,608, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Ford Explorer's resale value?

The current average of $13,608 sits slightly below last year's $14,545.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become more favorable for buyers, but it can also mean less upside for you if you plan to resell soon. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you can help protect value better than the broader market trend alone would suggest. Demand should remain supported by the model’s strong owner satisfaction and broad appeal as a family SUV.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2017 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 65.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.44% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $11,979, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $13,608 average.
• Ford refreshed it with updated styling, upgraded features, a more efficient engine, and a Platinum trim.

The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping target, the 2017 is the stronger pick because it combines a lower current price trend with strong owner satisfaction and plenty of listings to compare. If your priority is saving money upfront, the 2016 is the better secondary path, especially if you find one in excellent condition and can live with the older model year’s tradeoffs.
