What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Chevrolet Cruze?

At 53.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or multiple owners. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior repair quality, and whether the equipment and features you want are actually present on the specific listing. Because the Cruze was offered with different trim and package combinations, it pays to confirm the exact build before you commit.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The hatchback is offered in LT and Premier trims, and the LT is the lower-cost entry point with 16-inch alloys, a 6-speaker stereo with satellite radio, LED running lights, heated mirrors, and steering-wheel audio and phone controls. The Premier adds 17-inch wheels, leather, a heated steering wheel, extra interior lighting, and a rear suspension upgrade, so it suits you if you want a more upscale feel and more standard equipment.
• Powertrain: The Cruze uses a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine with 153 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. The automatic is rated at 31 mpg combined, 28 city, and 37 highway, while the manual is said to offer a slight 1-mpg advantage.
• Safety package: Chevy’s Teen Driver mode is standard on every Cruze. The LT can add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and rear parking sensors through the Driver Confidence Package, while the Premier needs the Driver Confidence II Package for forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams.
• Infotainment: Standard Chevy MyLink uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Navigation requires the Premier with the Sun and Sound with Navigation package, and wireless charging is available but may not fit larger phones well.
• Fuel efficiency: The automatic is rated at 31 mpg combined, 28 in the city, and 37 on the highway. The manual is said to return about 1 mpg more.

Which 2017 Chevrolet Cruze trim should I buy?

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze is offered in 2 trim levels: LT and Premier.

Here's the short version:

• LT: This is the best-value starting point if you want the Cruze hatchback without jumping too far up in price. You get the core tech and convenience basics, plus the option to add blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert with the Driver Confidence Package.
• Premier: Choose this if you want the most complete Cruze experience, with leather, heated steering wheel, 17-inch wheels, extra lighting, and the convenience package included. It’s the better pick if you want more comfort and a more upscale cabin, but it costs noticeably more.

For safety-minded shoppers, the LT’s Driver Confidence Package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and rear parking sensors, while the Premier needs the Driver Confidence II Package for forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Chevrolet Cruze?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,788 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.75% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 53.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,263, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze's resale value?

The current average of $9,263 sits slightly below last year's $9,724.

That softer pricing suggests the Cruze has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale if you buy at the right number. If you purchase near the lower end of the range and keep the car in clean condition, you’ll have a better chance of limiting your loss when it’s time to sell. The model’s broad appeal as a practical, efficient compact also helps keep demand from disappearing entirely.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.35/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze safe?

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze earns Good ratings from IIHS in Moderate Overlap Front and Side Impact testing, and it earns four-star ratings in all NHTSA tests except for a five-star frontal crash test.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Chevy’s Teen Driver mode is standard, and the Cruze also includes full-length side curtain, knee, and front and rear side airbags. The available Driver Confidence Package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and rear parking sensors, while the Premier’s Driver Confidence II Package adds forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams.

One caveat is that the Cruze lost its previous five-star government rating, so safety-conscious shoppers should pay close attention to the exact trim and available driver-assistance equipment on the listing you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 53.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.75% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.35/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• Chevrolet added a hatchback body style and standard Teen Driver mode for broader utility and family appeal.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $8,097, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $9,263 average.
• It’s a practical alternative pick with strong real-world comfort and long-trip composure.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $9,854, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $9,263 average.
• It adds diesel versions for buyers who want a more efficiency-focused niche.

The bottom line: If you want the hatchback body style, standard Teen Driver mode, and a market that’s softened enough to create some negotiating room, the 2017 is the right target. If your priority is spending less, the 2016 is the better value play; if you want to explore a more efficiency-focused direction, the 2018 is worth a look.
