How much does the 2017 BMW 5 Series cost?

Prices have softened 5.96% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,092 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series a good car?

Generally — the 2017 BMW 5 Series earns a 4/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Technology and Safety.

The 5 Series is described as a thoroughly renewed midsize luxury sedan with a fresh chassis, new engines, and updated iDrive, and it aims to balance performance with efficiency. It also leans back toward being a driver’s car, even though BMW’s evolutionary styling can make the changes easy to miss.

The market shows 33.8% good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2017 5 Series is presented as a well-built, balanced sedan with a sorted suspension, comfortable interior, and capable transmission. Its new engines are described as increasing power without increasing consumption, and the overall package is aimed at delivering strong performance without giving up efficiency.

The performance notes also point to a smooth, well-isolated powertrain once warmed up, with the 8-speed automatic doing its job well. The cost side of ownership is the bigger caution: the car can become expensive quickly once options are added, so long-term ownership risk rises if you buy a heavily equipped example.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW 5 Series?

At 57% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has a long options list or advanced driver-assistance equipment. Focus on overall condition, because the 5 Series can be heavily optioned and those features can affect both value and ownership costs.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 530i is the no-nonsense choice, with a well-built chassis, comfortable interior, and a strong turbo four, while higher trims add more power and equipment but can push the car deep into luxury-car pricing.
• Powertrain: The 530i uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the 540i adds a turbo inline six with 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque; the 8-speed automatic is standard, and there is no manual transmission.
• Safety package: The car can be equipped with blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep warning and intervention with side-collision avoidance, radar-controlled adaptive cruise, collision warning and intervention, pedestrian detection, traffic jam assistant, and automatic parking; some of these systems are optional rather than standard.
• Infotainment: The updated iDrive system is central to the cabin, and the car can be fitted with gesture control, a heads-up display, Apple CarPlay, and other tech features; Android Auto is not available.
• Fuel efficiency: The 530i is rated at 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway, with a combined rating of 27 mpg.

Which 2017 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2017 BMW 5 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 530i, 540i, M550i.

Here's the short version:

• 530i: This is the best-value choice if you want the core 5 Series experience without pushing the price too far. You get the updated turbo four, a strong chassis, and the same basic luxury-sedan mission, but the options list can still make it expensive if you start adding convenience and tech features.
• 540i: This is the step-up trim if you want noticeably stronger performance from the turbo inline six. It suits you best if you want more effortless passing power and are willing to pay more for it.
• M550i: This is the performance-focused choice, with the twin-turbo V8 and the quickest acceleration in the lineup. It makes sense if you want the most power and are comfortable with the highest ownership cost.

The safety content says the 5 Series earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and a five-star rating from NHTSA, with top scores of Good in all IIHS tests.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW 5 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.

• Deal availability: 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,092 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.96% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 57.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,721, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 BMW 5 Series's resale value?

The current average of $16,970 sits slightly below last year's $18,046.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more affordably now. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment level rather than just the badge alone.

Because the model has strong expert ratings and a solid owner satisfaction score, well-kept examples should still attract interest. Heavily optioned cars may not recover their full original cost, but clean, well-documented examples should remain easier to move.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series safe?

The 2017 BMW 5 Series earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS, receiving Good scores in all IIHS tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The available driver-assistance suite includes blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep warning and intervention with side-collision avoidance, radar-controlled adaptive cruise, collision warning and intervention, pedestrian detection, traffic jam assistant, and automatic parking. Some of the most advanced features are optional, so equipment can vary a lot from one used example to another.

Should I buy a 2017 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.96% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It’s all new for the year, with a fresh chassis, updated iDrive, and new engines.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $18,219, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $16,970 average.
• It adds the 530e plug-in hybrid, giving you a more efficiency-focused option.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, inventory, and the refreshed 2017 redesign, this year makes sense. If efficiency is a priority and you’re willing to pay more, the 2018 is the better alternative.
