CarGurus Analysis: 2017 BMW 4 Series

Summary
With 177 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,352, 18.1% of 2017 BMW 4 Series listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 BMW 4 Series 4.08 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW 4 Series stands out as a premium two-door model that blends sporty proportions with a more upscale, distinctive feel than a conventional sedan-based coupe. It shares much with the contemporary 3 Series, but BMW gave it a lower, sleeker body, and the first-generation car also introduced the Gran Coupe body style, a five-door hatchback version that broadened the lineup beyond the usual coupe and convertible formats. That combination of style and variety is a big part of its appeal, especially for buyers who want something more expressive than a mainstream midsize car.
For 2017, the 4 Series also benefited from an early-2017 update that brought LED headlights for all models and stiffer suspension for a sharper drive. The generation already offered a strong equipment list, including 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, automatic climate control, power front seats and BMW’s iDrive operating system, so it felt well appointed even in base form. Buyers also had a range of trims and powertrains to choose from, including turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines, rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive, and either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic on many versions.
That said, the 2017 BMW 4 Series is not without compromises. The convertible’s folding metal roof adds weight and complexity and takes up some boot space when folded, and BMW repairs can be costly if something goes wrong. Still, for shoppers who value strong performance, good handling and a premium feel, the 2017 4 Series remains an appealing used choice.

The car is in worse conditions than shown in these photos. The engine bay is dirty and the brakes of rust on them. The car was also driven twice the national average in one year (29k miles) and is $3,000 overpriced. The salesperson was super nice and helpful but the car was just in bad conditions.

The only blemish so far is it lacks remote start, other than that I love this car. I have the 440i and am impressed with the power, comfort and drivability, a solid 4.95. I’ve had it 3 days and am still in the can’t wait to drive it again stage. Great job BMW.

This BMW 4 series car is absolutely stunning. Beautiful colors both inside and out and very well equipped. And the price sure seems fair when considering modern day pricing structures. I really came close to buying this car but my BMW X3 just suits my needs better.

Is the 2017 BMW 4 Series a good car?
Generally — the 2017 BMW 4 Series earns a 4.08/5 user rating, which points to a favorable ownership experience for many shoppers. Drivers consistently praise its performance and handling, along with its power and quality, and many also like its stylish design and value for the money. Is the 2017 BMW 4 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.08/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback also points to a generally dependable ownership experience, with some drivers describing it as a car they can count on over time. At the same time, a few owners mention reliability concerns and minor issues, so you should expect some variation from one used example to another. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is manageable if you choose carefully, but it is worth being selective about condition and maintenance history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW 4 Series?
At 53.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, especially if you are comparing multiple listings at similar prices. Put a pre-purchase inspection near the top of your checklist so you can catch wear, repair quality, or hidden issues before they become your problem. Focus closely on overall condition, since a premium model like this can be costly if something needs attention later.

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly when a strong listing appears.
- Deal availability: 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 890 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.62% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $15,845, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 BMW 4 Series's resale value?
The current average of $15,845 sits slightly below last year's $16,789.
That price movement suggests the model has softened a bit in the near term, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. If you plan to sell later, the current market indicates you may not see rapid appreciation, so condition and mileage will matter a lot when it comes time to list it. Strong demand for well-kept examples should still support a reasonable resale path if you maintain the car carefully.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.08/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW 4 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.62% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.08/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 is a smart primary choice if you want the updated look and equipment, a sporty driving feel, and a market that currently gives you some negotiating room. If you are especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2017 remains the better all-around pick when you want a balance of value, style, and buyer appeal.
