Is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma reliable?

Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The expert drive notes reinforce that theme by describing the truck’s capability, reliability, and predictability as core strengths, while the cost-effectiveness notes say it is not likely to present unusual problems or unexpected major repairs.

The maintenance outlook is helped by the truck’s durable design and the revised frame and composite bed, which address some past rust concerns. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a hard-worked truck may hide wear from towing, off-road use, or deferred maintenance.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?

At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on frame condition, suspension wear, and signs of heavy use. Pay close attention to how the truck was driven and maintained, since a Tacoma that has seen towing or off-road duty may need more scrutiny than a lightly used commuter.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup starts with the hard-working SR and continues to the well-equipped SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and the range-topping Limited. SRs and SR5s feature fabric-trimmed seats, while the Limited gets premium leather. SR5 adds a 6.1-inch touchscreen and Scout GPS Link, and the TRD models step up to Entune Premium Audio with a 7-inch touchscreen and navigation.
• Powertrain: You can choose a carried-over 2.7-liter 4-cylinder or the new 3.5-liter V6. The V6 makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque, and it is paired with a 6-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual. The 4-cylinder makes 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque.
• Safety package: The Toyota Star Safety System™ includes vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. The truck also includes knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts are among the available driver aids.
• Infotainment: SR models get Entune audio, SR5 adds Entune Audio Plus with a 6.1-inch touchscreen and Scout GPS Link, and TRD models get Entune Premium Audio with a 7-inch touchscreen, navigation, and an App Suite. Bluetooth, audio streaming, Siri® Eyes Free, touchscreen controls, and voice recognition are standard, but there is no WiFi hotspot capability.
• Fuel efficiency: The 4-cylinder returns 19 mpg city/23 highway/21 combined with RWD. The V6 returns 19/24 with RWD and 18/23 with 4WD. In testing, the V6 4WD TRD Off-Road returned 18 mpg city/23 highway.

Which 2016 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 5 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• SR: This is the work-focused starting point, and it makes the Tacoma’s core toughness accessible without extra frills. Choose it if you want the simplest path into the lineup and do not need the upgraded infotainment or premium cabin touches found higher up.
• SR5: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds Entune Audio Plus, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, and Scout GPS Link while staying below the TRD models. It is the trim to target if you want a more livable daily driver without paying for off-road hardware you may not use.
• TRD Sport: This trim is for you if you want a more feature-rich Tacoma with the upgraded Entune Premium Audio system and a stronger emphasis on style and road presence. It sits above the SR5 and gives you a more polished feel without jumping all the way to the off-road-focused model.
• TRD Off-Road: This is the one to buy if you plan to use the Tacoma on rough terrain. It adds extra skidplates, Bilstein suspension dampers, and an off-road-tuned suspension, along with crawl control and multi-terrain select in the performance content.
• Limited: This is the comfort-first choice, with premium leather and the Entune Premium JBL Audio system. Pick it if you want the most upscale Tacoma experience and are willing to pay for it.

The safety package includes Toyota Star Safety System™ and available blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,229 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.59% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 59.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $23,333, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $23,703 sits slightly below last year's $24,334.

That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also suggests the truck has already absorbed some of its recent market premium. If you plan to sell later, the Tacoma’s strong reputation and steady demand should help support value better than many rivals.

Because the market still shows meaningful interest in this truck, a well-kept example should remain easier to move than a comparable midsize pickup with a weaker reputation. Condition, mileage, and trim will matter a lot, so a clean history and strong maintenance record should help you protect resale value.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma safe?

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma earns a Good IIHS result for most tests in the prior model year reference, though roof strength was rated Marginal.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Tacoma includes the Toyota Star Safety System™, which brings vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. It also has knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests, while available blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts add useful awareness.

The main caveat is that crash-test ratings for this model year were not yet available at the time of evaluation, and pickups naturally carry rollover and stopping-distance tradeoffs compared with cars.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.59% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 brings a full redesign, a stronger V6, and a major tech upgrade over the previous generation.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $20,275, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $23,703 average.
• It is a final-year truck with a limited-production TRD Pro trim and a strong off-road focus.

The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded Tacoma with newer design, stronger tech, and broader trim choice, the 2016 is the smarter primary pick. If your budget is tighter and you mainly want a rugged, off-road-oriented Tacoma, the 2015 can still make sense as a lower-cost alternative.
