How much does the 2016 Toyota Prius cost?

Prices are up 1.68% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.

There are 680 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 Toyota Prius a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Toyota Prius earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating.

The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.

It remains a central name in the hybrid market and is presented as the standard bearer for that segment, which fits you if you want a fuel-saving daily driver with a strong reputation. The fourth-generation redesign keeps the Prius formula familiar while adding new tricks, and the expert review notes that it still delivers the qualities buyers expect from the nameplate.

32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you still have room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Toyota Prius reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2016 Prius is framed as a proven hybrid with staying power, and the expert review emphasizes that the segment itself has demonstrated durability over time. Its 1.8-liter gas engine paired with two electric motor-generators is described as delivering decent pickup and solid real-world drivability, which supports confidence in everyday use.

The cost-effectiveness notes also point to competitive pricing and a package that should appeal to buyers who want to save fuel without giving up practicality. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that hybrid-specific components and unusual controls can make upkeep and repairs more important to monitor closely.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Prius?

At 52.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing multiple listings at similar prices. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and whether the car’s equipment and safety features match the trim being advertised. Because this model has a distinctive layout and hybrid hardware, it’s worth checking that everything functions as intended before you commit.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim has a simpler setup, including a 6.1-inch touchscreen and fewer upscale features, while higher trims add a 7-inch touchscreen and more convenience and tech equipment.
• Powertrain: It uses a 1.8-liter gas engine with two electric motor-generators for a net 121 horsepower, and the Two Eco is tuned for better efficiency.
• Safety package: Every Prius comes with Toyota’s Star Safety System, plus advanced front- and side-impact airbags; the Four adds Pre-Collision Avoidance with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, automatic high-beams, and dynamic radar cruise control, while the Four and Four Touring also add a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: The Two and Two Eco get a 6.1-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth voice activation, a reversing camera, and Siri Eyes Free, while the Three, Three Touring, Four, and Four Touring upgrade to a 7-inch touchscreen with navigation, the Entune app suite, and HD predictive traffic and Doppler weather overlay.
• Fuel efficiency: It is estimated at 54 mpg city, 50 highway, and 52 combined, while the Two Eco is rated at 58/53/56.

Which 2016 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Prius is offered in 6 trim levels: Two, Two Eco, Three, Three Touring, Four, Four Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Two: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Prius basics with the 6.1-inch touchscreen, reversing camera, Bluetooth voice activation, and Siri Eyes Free. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable skipping the extra convenience and safety upgrades.
• Two Eco: This is the best-value choice if your priority is efficiency, since it adds the stronger fuel-economy focus of the Eco sub-trim while keeping the lower-cost setup.
• Three: This is the first trim that brings the 7-inch touchscreen, navigation, the Entune app suite, and HD traffic/weather overlays, so it’s the smart step up if you want a more complete tech package.
• Three Touring: Choose this if you want the Three’s equipment with a more upscale Touring treatment, but the core value still comes from the Three’s added infotainment and convenience features.
• Four: This is the trim to target if you want the most important safety upgrades, including Pre-Collision Avoidance with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, automatic high-beams, and dynamic radar cruise control.
• Four Touring: Pick this if you want the Four’s safety equipment plus the Touring treatment, and you’re willing to pay more for the top-end version.

The Four trim is the one that adds the most meaningful safety technology, while the Four Touring layers on the same safety package with a higher-end presentation.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Prius?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 680 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.68% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 52.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,193, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Toyota Prius's resale value?

The current average of $15,208 sits slightly above last year's $14,957.

That upward move suggests the market still sees value in this model year, which can help support resale strength if you buy carefully. Because prices are already trending higher, a well-kept example may hold its appeal better than a neglected one. If you plan to sell later, condition and trim choice should matter a lot, especially for buyers who want efficiency and a strong reputation.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Prius safe?

The 2016 Toyota Prius earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Every Prius comes with Toyota’s Star Safety System, which includes enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop Technology. It also includes advanced front- and side-impact airbags as part of the standard safety suite.

The Four trim adds Pre-Collision Avoidance with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, automatic high-beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. The Four and Four Touring also add a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, so lower trims miss some of the most advanced driver-assistance features.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.68% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It brings the fourth-generation redesign’s updated styling, improved fuel economy, and better handling balance.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $12,561, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $15,208 average.
• It combines utility, comfort, and fuel economy in a way few cars can match.

The bottom line: If you want the newer fourth-generation Prius with stronger market momentum and updated features, the 2016 is the better primary choice. If your budget matters more than the newest redesign, the 2015 is the smarter price-sensitive alternative.
