Used 2016 Nissan Frontier for Sale nearSan Diego, CA

How much does the 2016 Nissan Frontier cost?

Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.

There are 755 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare before you buy.

Is the 2016 Nissan Frontier a good car?

Generally — the 2016 Nissan Frontier earns a 4.3/5 user rating and a 6.7/10 expert rating, which points to a truck that appeals more for straightforward usefulness than for class-leading polish. Owners consistently praise the powerful V6 engine, reliability, and comfortable interior, and they also like practical features such as the rear camera and Bluetooth. The Frontier’s simple, work-ready character fits you best if you want a no-frills pickup that stays close to the basics. With 31.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still room to find value if you shop carefully.

Is the 2016 Nissan Frontier reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owners also describe the Frontier as reliable and appreciate its dependable, trouble-free character over time. The truck’s straightforward hardware and familiar setup reinforce that impression, and the expert review notes that it remains a proven, old-school pickup rather than a complicated one. The cost-effectiveness coverage also points out that the Frontier’s lower base price helps make it a practical ownership choice. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure a specific truck has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by hard use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Nissan Frontier?

At 60.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean trucks from ones with prior damage or other red flags. After that, prioritize a thorough inspection of the body, bed, cabin, and mechanical condition, especially if the truck has been used for hauling or towing. It also makes sense to focus on how the truck was equipped, since lower trims can be very sparse while higher trims add much more convenience and safety equipment.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Frontier ranges from very basic S models with cloth upholstery and steel wheels to higher trims that add alloys, upgraded cloth, a touchscreen, satellite radio, keyless entry, and more comfort features. The base trim is especially spartan, so you should pay close attention to whether the truck has the equipment you want.
• Powertrain: You can find a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder with 152 hp and a 4.0-liter V6 with 261 hp. The V6 brings much stronger acceleration and towing ability, while the four-cylinder is the simpler setup.
• Safety package: The Frontier comes standard with 4-wheel antilock discs, dual front, front-side, and full-length curtain-side airbags, and stability control. Rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera are available on some versions, and lower trims miss some of the convenience and safety equipment found higher up the range.
• Infotainment: Lower trims can be very basic, while higher trims add a 5-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration, satellite radio, and a better stereo. The 5.8-inch touchscreen and 10-speaker audio system are reserved for higher trims.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-liter engine can return as much as 19 mpg city and 23 highway, while the V6 drops only slightly in some configurations and can still be a reasonable tradeoff for the added power.

Which 2016 Nissan Frontier trim should I buy?

The 2016 Nissan Frontier is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SV, Desert Runner, Pro-4X, and SL.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the most affordable way into the Frontier, but it is very bare-bones. You get the basics, and the automatic version adds useful everyday equipment, but you should only choose it if price matters more than comfort and convenience.
• SV: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a full power package, a touchscreen with smartphone integration, satellite radio, and keyless entry. If you want a Frontier that feels usable without jumping too far in price, this is the one to focus on.
• Desert Runner: This trim adds styling changes plus off-road suspension and tires, but it is limited to rear-wheel drive. It makes sense if you want a more rugged look and feel without going all the way to the top off-road model.
• Pro-4X: This is the off-road-focused choice, with four-wheel drive, a locking rear differential, skid plates, a better stereo, a larger touchscreen, and more convenience features. It is the right pick if you want the most capability and equipment.
• SL: This is the top trim, but it gives up the Pro-4X’s off-road hardware in exchange for more upscale touches like larger wheels and side steps. It suits you if comfort and appearance matter more than trail capability.

The safety content also notes that rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera are optional additions, so it is worth checking whether a specific truck has them.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Nissan Frontier?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly when you find the right truck.

• Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 755 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 60.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,510, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Nissan Frontier's resale value?

The current average of $15,007 sits slightly above last year's $14,995.

That small increase suggests the Frontier’s used-market value has stayed fairly stable. For a future seller, that kind of steady pricing can be helpful because it points to consistent demand rather than sharp depreciation. The truck’s value also benefits from its reputation for reliability and its straightforward, practical appeal, which can keep buyers interested over time.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Nissan Frontier safe?

The Frontier earns top IIHS scores in all tests except the seat/head restraint test, which received an Acceptable rating, and it also earned a four-star rollover rating from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Frontier comes standard with 4-wheel antilock discs, dual front, front-side, and full-length curtain-side airbags, and stability control. Rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera are available, which can help with low-speed maneuvering. One caveat is the IIHS seat/head restraint result, which is weaker than the truck’s other crash-test scores. There was also a recall involving starter motor connections on certain V6 trucks built in a narrow production window.

What should I buy: the 2016 Nissan Frontier or a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 Frontier is a carryover truck with only small updates, including new colors and a standard sunroof on the SV trim.

The bottom line: If you want a simple, proven Frontier and you find the right truck at a fair price, the 2016 model year makes sense. If you are shopping mainly on value, this year’s stable pricing and decent deal share are appealing. If you want a more modern-feeling truck, you may want to compare it with other years before deciding.

How does the 2016 Nissan Frontier compare to the 2016 Toyota Tacoma?

Our experts score the 2016 Nissan Frontier 6.7/10 and the 2016 Toyota Tacoma 7.7/10.

The Frontier is the cheaper buy, with a much lower average used price and more listings to choose from. The Tacoma brings a stronger overall expert score and a higher starting price, so you are paying more for a truck that our experts rate more highly. If your priority is value and simplicity, the Frontier has the edge; if you want the stronger all-around package, the Tacoma is the better pick.
