CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
Summary
With 95 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,452, 15.8% of 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 4.64 / 5 stars.
71.6% of 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class stands out as a used luxury sedan that blends a polished, upscale feel with a strong reputation for technology and comfort. In its fifth-generation form, it was introduced in 2016 as a sedan, with wagon versions following later the same year, and it brought a more S-Class-like look along with a high-tech cabin. The interior is defined by a swoopy dashboard, circular air vents, and, in most versions, two side-by-side 12.3-inch display screens that create the appearance of one large screen. Standard equipment is generous, with electric adjustment for the steering wheel and front seats, a rear-view camera, satellite navigation, LED headlamps, and a wealth of driver-assistance safety features.
What makes the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class especially appealing is how much performance and refinement it offers across the range. The available engines include 2.0-liter four-cylinder and 3.0-liter six-cylinder options, all with a nine-speed automatic transmission, and some versions are available with rear-wheel drive or 4Matic all-wheel drive. The model also includes Mercedes-AMG variants for buyers who want much stronger performance, while the standard car still feels like a true luxury vehicle. Owners commonly praise its classic styling, comfortable drive, and the six-cylinder engine’s performance, which fits the car’s upscale character well.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind. The E-Class is expensive, even by class standards, and some owners have reported juddering brakes, glitchy infotainment systems, and, on early E300 models, a potential cracked-piston issue. Even so, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class remains a compelling used choice because it delivers a lot of comfort, prestige, and technology for the money, while still feeling current and well built.

Moving from sn SUV to a sedan the E400 series offered Mercedes dependability and performance at an affordable price. Thrilled with my purchase. I had looked at the 300 but at 6-4 I found the 400 to be more comfortable.

How much does the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,284 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,002 |
| Year-Round High | $15,970 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,554 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.73% |
Prices have softened 1.73% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,038 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class a good car?
Yes — the 4.64/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its classic styling, comfortable drive, and the performance of the 6-cylinder engine, and the overview also highlights its upscale feel, technology, and comfort. If you want a used luxury sedan that feels polished and well equipped, this model year fits that brief well. With 33.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.64/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary also emphasizes reliability, dependable ownership, and a trouble-free experience for many drivers, which supports confidence in the car’s long-term character. That said, used luxury cars can still bring higher upkeep, so your risk is less about the badge and more about how well a specific example has been maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?
At 55.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection from a shop that knows luxury sedans. Focus on condition details that matter most on a used E-Class, including evidence of prior bodywork, signs of electronic glitches, and how smoothly the car drives and brakes.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,038 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.73% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,002, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class's resale value?
The current average of $15,284 sits slightly below last year's $15,554.
That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that value retention will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and service history rather than just the badge alone. Well-kept examples should still attract interest because this model year remains desirable among shoppers looking for a comfortable, upscale used sedan.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.64/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.73% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.64/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, features, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the primary year to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still shop nearby years, but the 2016 stands out as the more compelling starting point because it combines a softer market with strong owner approval and a broad supply of listings.
