How much does the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee cost?

Prices have softened 8.23% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 3,252 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 6.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10. Owners repeatedly praise its comfort, performance, luxurious features, and spacious interior, and the review summary also highlights the powerful Hemi engine. In use, it fits buyers who want an SUV with real off-pavement confidence, towing ability, and a strong sense of style. With 31.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop carefully.

Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback points to comfort, performance, luxurious features, and a spacious interior, while also describing the vehicle as a strong fit for everyday use and rugged adventures. The expert review also emphasizes that the Grand Cherokee is built for serious capability and can handle demanding use, but it requires compromise to deliver those strengths. Jeep’s own cost-effectiveness commentary warns that reliability predictions are unimpressive, so used buyers should think carefully about maintenance history and long-term ownership risk.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

At 57.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has any accident history. Focus on signs of wear that could affect comfort, ride quality, braking, and electronics, since those are the areas that matter most in daily use. If you plan to tow or venture off pavement, make sure the vehicle’s equipment and condition match that use case.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Jeep sells this SUV in Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT model series. The Overland test vehicle adds a 19-speaker sound system and an Advanced Technology package, while the SRT is described as track-ready and made for performance on pavement. The base versions are the ones most likely to leave you without the richer equipment and advanced safety content seen on higher trims.
• Powertrain: The standard 3.6-liter V6 makes 295 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, and Jeep also offers a 5.7-liter V8 plus an optional 3.0-liter diesel V6. The V6 is described as robust and capable, while the diesel is noted for stronger fuel economy but a high extra cost.
• Safety package: The Advanced Technology package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. That package is optional and pricey, so you should confirm whether a used listing has it.
• Infotainment: The Grand Cherokee uses an 8.4-inch color touchscreen with Uconnect, and the system adds Siri Eyes Free and Do Not Disturb functions for 2016. It is easy to use, but the review notes that the system is aging and that Uconnect Access relies on a slow 3G connection.
• Fuel efficiency: The updated V6 is rated at 19 mpg combined, and the review says official fuel economy estimates rise to 21 mpg combined. The test vehicle averaged 18.7 mpg, so real-world results may fall short of the estimate.

Which 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee trim should I buy?

The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in 5 trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, SRT.

Here's the short version:

• Laredo: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Grand Cherokee’s core capability and styling without paying for the richer equipment found higher up the range.
• Limited: This is the trim to target if you want a better balance of equipment and value, especially since Jeep also offers a 75th Anniversary Edition package on Laredo and Limited versions.
• Overland: This is the best-value choice if you want the upscale feel highlighted in the review, including the 8.4-inch touchscreen, 19-speaker sound system, and available Advanced Technology package.
• Summit: Choose this if you want the more premium end of the lineup and are willing to pay for the added luxury image.
• SRT: This is the performance-focused choice, and the review says it is track-ready right from the showroom floor.

The safety-package note to keep in mind is that the Advanced Technology package is optional, not standard.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,252 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.23% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 57.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $12,870, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee's resale value?

The current average of $12,870 sits slightly below last year's $14,024.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that pricing pressure is real, so condition and equipment matter more if you want to protect value. Listings with strong history, desirable features, and clean presentation should hold up better than average.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee safe?

The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee does not meet the criteria for a Top Safety Pick nomination from IIHS.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The optional Advanced Technology package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. That package is a meaningful safety upgrade, but it is not standard. The review also notes that the Grand Cherokee’s Marginal small-overlap frontal result keeps it from Top Safety Pick status, so you should pay close attention to crash history and equipment when shopping used.

Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.23% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It blends towing ability, off-road confidence, and upscale appeal.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $11,384, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $12,870 average.
• It offers a wide range of trims and engines for different budgets.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $14,134, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $12,870 average.
• It adds a more premium feel and a Trailhawk version that underscores off-road character.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of capability, style, and current pricing, the 2016 is the main target. If you are price-sensitive, the 2015 is the value play; if you want a newer-feeling alternative and can spend more, the 2017 is worth a look.

How does the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee compare to the 2016 Ford Explorer?

Our experts score the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6.8/10 and the 2016 Ford Explorer 6.8/10. The Jeep has the edge in power, fuel economy, and off-road character, while the Explorer offers more listings and a lower average used price. The Grand Cherokee also has a stronger accident-free share than the Explorer, but both sit at the same expert score, so your choice comes down to whether you value capability or a lower purchase price more.
