Why it stands out
The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee stands out for its broad range of abilities and its unmistakable appeal. People are drawn to it because it provides the ability to go almost anywhere at almost anytime and to do almost anything. It also has the kind of styling and image that can be a deciding factor for buyers who simply like the Jeep look and presence.
At the same time, the Grand Cherokee is not presented as a no-compromise SUV. The test-drive summary says that choosing one over other SUVs makes the most sense if you need to tow a fair amount of weight, need to go far off the pavement, or value its styling and image. It also notes that getting those strengths requires compromise, which is an important part of its character.

After driving it for the first time I knew I wanted it. I had to have some things line up for me to be able to buy it but they did and I was able to bring it home. The style, comfort and luxury are more than I ever could’ve asked for.

Rides and handles great. The 3.0L diesel runs awesome and gets excellent fuel mileage. Can't hear the diesel at all on the road. The looks of the GC are so sexy!

2016 Jeep Cherokee - great everyday vehicle. Super comfortable and great capabilities. 4x4 with all the comfort of a fine leather chair. Mudd/rocks no problem. Highway driving @ 80 mph no problem. Plenty of space for all my sh...stuff. :) This is our fourth GC and fifth Jeep overall. No complaints.

How much does the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $13,215 |
| Year-Round Low | $13,215 |
| Year-Round High | $14,432 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,427 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.41% |
Prices have softened 8.41% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,398 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee a good car?
Yes — the 4.8/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 6.83/10. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable cabin, strong performance, and luxurious features. The spacious interior and powerful Hemi engine also come up repeatedly, which fits a vehicle that appeals both as an everyday SUV and for more rugged use.
The Grand Cherokee’s appeal is strongest if you value its styling, towing ability, or off-pavement capability. If you want a more conventional SUV experience, the tradeoffs in refinement matter more.
Good and great deals make up 32.6% of the market, so there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a vehicle people trust for comfort, performance, and a generally dependable daily experience. The review summary also highlights the spacious interior and powerful engine as reasons owners keep coming back to it.
The expert drive notes that Jeep built this SUV for serious use, with robust acceleration and off-road hardware that supports long-term capability. It also mentions that the automatic engine stop/start system operates in a mostly unobtrusive fashion.
The cost-effectiveness commentary warns that reliability predictions are unimpressive, so used buyers should pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
At 59.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of bodywork, suspension, and any signs of prior repair. Because this SUV is often bought for capability, it is especially important to confirm that the condition matches the seller’s claims.
Focus on how the vehicle was equipped and whether the features you want are actually present. A careful test drive should also check ride quality, braking feel, and steering behavior.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Jeep sells this SUV in Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT model series. The Overland test vehicle is described as extra fancy thanks to bronze exposed stitching and bronze accent trim and panels, while the base Laredo is the least expensive starting point.
- Powertrain: The standard 3.6-liter V6 makes 295 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, while the optional 5.7-liter V8 is for maximum towing capacity. The V6 is described as providing robust acceleration and towing up to 6,200 pounds.
- Safety package: The optional Advanced Technology package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. It is pricey at almost two grand.
- Infotainment: The Grand Cherokee Overland uses an 8.4-inch color touchscreen with Uconnect, and the system adds Siri Eyes Free and Do Not Disturb functions for 2016. The text also notes that Uconnect Access uses a slow 3G connection.
- Fuel efficiency: Official fuel economy estimates rise from 19 mpg combined to 21, and the optional diesel V6 returned 22.9 mpg in testing.
Which 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee trim should I buy?
The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in 5 trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT.
Here's the short version:
- Laredo: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Grand Cherokee’s core capability at the lowest starting price.
- Limited: This is the trim to target if you want a more balanced mix of equipment and value without jumping too far up the price ladder.
- Overland: This is the best-value trim if you want the richer cabin presentation and the features highlighted in the test vehicle, including the 8.4-inch touchscreen and available Advanced Technology package.
- Summit: Choose this if you want the more upscale end of the lineup and are willing to pay for it.
- SRT: This is the performance-focused choice, built for pavement and track-ready use rather than everyday value.
The safety-package note to keep in mind is that the optional Advanced Technology package adds several useful driver-assistance features, but it is not standard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right one.
- Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,398 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.41% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,215, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee's resale value?
The current average of $13,215 sits slightly below last year's $14,427.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right number. If you purchase near the current market average or below it, you reduce the risk of taking an immediate hit later.
The Grand Cherokee’s broad appeal can still support demand, especially for shoppers who want towing ability, rugged styling, or a premium-feeling SUV. Condition and equipment will matter a lot, so well-kept examples should hold up better than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee safe?
The 2016 Grand Cherokee does not meet the criteria for a Top Safety Pick nomination from IIHS because of a Marginal rating in the small overlap frontal impact test.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The optional Advanced Technology package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. That package is a meaningful upgrade if you want more driver assistance, but it is not standard.
The safety writeup also notes that the federal government had not rated this SUV in crash protection at the time referenced, so the IIHS result is the key published benchmark here. That Marginal small-overlap result is the main caveat to keep in mind.
Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.41% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 brings improved fuel economy, updated steering, and available driver-assistance tech.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $11,723, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $13,215 average.
- It offers a wide range of trims and engines for different budgets.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $14,395, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $13,215 average.
- It leans more into upscale comfort and broad capability.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of current pricing, owner satisfaction, and available inventory, the 2016 is the primary path to consider. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 is the price-sensitive alternative; if you want a newer-feeling take with a more premium lean, the 2017 is worth a look.
