Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Hyundai Tucson 3.8 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.8 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Hyundai Tucson stands out as a thoroughly redesigned small crossover with styling that is appealing from every angle. It also brings a more comfortable and functional interior, along with top safety ratings and industry-leading warranty protection. For buyers who want a compact SUV that feels more polished than basic, those strengths make it easy to understand the appeal.
It is also described as bigger and better than ever, especially in cargo space and in its available safety and infotainment technologies. That said, the main drawback is the powertrain most Tucsons will use, which is presented as the significant deal-breaker when compared with established rivals in the segment. Overall, the 2016 Tucson looks like a well-rounded choice with strong practicality and features, but its everyday appeal depends on whether the standard powertrain is enough for the buyer.

I really liked this vehicle when I took it for a test drive. The interior was clean, the original owner's manual was available, and it drove very smoothly. I wasn't able to test it at highway speeds because I was in a School Zone. I definitely would have bought it, but I couldn't justify the need for it. Some lucky person will snatch it up, I'm sure.

Worst car Ive ever owned. 3 out of 4 doors stopped working (couldnt open or close them), leaks oil, transmission overheats when backing up an incline slowly, AC died after 80K km, Im just waiting for the transmission to fail as that is a well know problem and car jerks or doesnt move upon initial acceleration. DO NOT BUY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Consumer Reports gives reliability as 1 out of 10 (likely only because you cant give zero)

I think this car is a very good for its price, the interior is so good. Only issue so far, is that the fuel consumption is quite high.

| Current Average Price | $11,156 |
| Year-Round Low | $11,156 |
| Year-Round High | $11,669 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,480 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.83% |
Prices have softened 2.83% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,604 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Tucson a good car?
With a user rating of 3.8/5 and an expert rating of 7.8/10, the 2016 Tucson lands in the solid-but-selective-buy range.
The model scores 10/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Drivers commonly praise the smooth ride, comfortable interior, and reliability, and many also like features such as cooled seats and the panoramic roof. The overview points to a compact SUV that feels more polished than basic, with stronger practicality, more cargo space, and useful safety and infotainment technology.
That combination makes the Tucson appealing if you want a small SUV that emphasizes comfort, style, and everyday usability more than outright performance. 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Tucson reliable?
The 2016 Tucson is presented as a model with historically strong durability and the backing of Hyundai’s long warranty coverage, which supports its dependability case.
User feedback also points to reliability as a strength, with owners describing the Tucson as smooth and comfortable while appreciating its overall dependability. The expert evaluation adds that the SUV should remain relatively affordable to own, and free roadside assistance for the first 5 years or 60,000 miles helps reduce ownership stress.
The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is the transmission, since the 7-speed dual-clutch setup is singled out as the part most likely to draw negative owner feedback over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Hyundai Tucson?
At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and how the transmission behaves in low-speed driving, since that’s the area most likely to affect day-to-day satisfaction.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE is the base trim, while Sport and Limited add more equipment, including a hands-free power-operated rear liftgate on Sport and Limited models. The Limited also adds an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, a premium sound system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and Blue Link connected services.
- Powertrain: Every version except the base SE uses a turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine with 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 7-speed EcoShift dual-clutch automated manual transmission. The powertrain delivers strong midrange acceleration, but low-speed response can feel delayed.
- Safety package: Every 2016 Tucson has a standard reversing camera. Sport and Limited models add blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist, while the Limited and its optional Ultimate Package are required for automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. The lane-departure warning system is also included in the Ultimate Package.
- Infotainment: Limited models add an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and a premium sound system. Blue Link connected services are included, with remote access and safety-related functions available through subscription-based services.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates 24 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 26 mpg combined.
Which 2016 Hyundai Tucson trim should I buy?
The 2016 Hyundai Tucson is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, Eco, Sport, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the redesigned Tucson. It gives you the core Tucson experience, but you give up the extra convenience and safety equipment found higher up the range.
- Eco: This trim is the better-value step up if you want more of the Tucson’s upgraded feel without jumping all the way to the top. It should suit you if you want a more balanced mix of equipment and price.
- Sport: This is the trim to target if you want a stronger feature set, including the hands-free rear liftgate and the blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist. It’s the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds meaningful convenience and safety equipment.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the most upscale Tucson experience, including the 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, premium audio, dual-zone climate control, and Blue Link connected services. It’s also the trim tied to the available automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning through the Ultimate Package.
The safety package is strongest on the Sport and Limited trims, while the Limited and its Ultimate Package unlock the most advanced driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Tucson?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop, compare, and wait for the right listing.
- Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,604 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.83% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,156, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Hyundai Tucson's resale value?
The current average of $11,156 sits slightly below last year's $11,480.
That tells you the Tucson has softened a bit in the used market, which can help you as a buyer today. If you plan to sell later, the current pricing suggests you should expect a modestly softer resale environment rather than a strong appreciation story.
For a future seller, the upside is that the Tucson still has broad appeal thanks to its styling, comfort, and feature content. The downside is that the market is already pricing in some depreciation, so condition, mileage, and trim level will matter a lot when it’s time to list it.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Tucson safe?
The 2016 Tucson is a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS and earns Good ratings in every crash-test assessment, plus a Superior rating for front crash prevention.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Every 2016 Tucson comes with a standard reversing camera, and Sport and Limited models add blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist. The Limited trim and its optional Ultimate Package are required for automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and the Ultimate Package also adds lane-departure warning.
Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Tucson or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.83% compared with last year.
- It’s the first year of the redesigned Tucson, with standout styling, a more comfortable and functional interior, and strong safety and feature content.
The bottom line: The 2016 Tucson makes sense if you want the redesigned look and a well-equipped small SUV at a softened used price. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can also use the current market to shop carefully and focus on the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than rushing into the first attractive listing.
