Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford F-150 stands out as a pickup that leans hard into luxury without giving up its truck identity. Ford’s F-150 Limited is described as a genuine luxury vehicle in all but name, and it is presented as loaded with extras and tasteful trimmings. That combination gives it a more upscale feel than buyers usually expect from a full-size, light-duty pickup.
What makes it especially appealing is the way those upscale touches are paired with a strong overall reputation. The source calls it arguably the best full-size, light-duty pickup you can buy, which helps explain why it can look like a value despite its high price. At the same time, the price is still a clear consideration, so this is a truck that appeals most to buyers who want premium features and are willing to pay for them.

First off, the waffles color (a beautiful, unique shade) really makes this truck stand out. It turns heads everywhere I go. The leather interior gives it a premium feel, and the sunroof adds an open, airy vibe, especially on sunny drives. This truck is packed with features—from the tech to the comfort, it has everything you could want. Whether it’s advanced infotainment, driver assists, or the luxury finishes, it doesn’t miss. The engine is powerful and responsive, making highway merges and towing feel effortless.

Great value for the vehicle. High mileage but that is not an issue like it used to be.

The truck spent the first 5 years in Michigan. There was new undercoating over the entire bottom of vehicle. In the cracks of the leaf springs and other crevices I could see crusty rust. Didn’t even take it for a drive.

Drivers consistently praise its comfort, power, and variety of features, along with the smooth ride and spacious interior. The turbo V6 engines also come up often as a highlight, and the truck’s upscale Limited trim gives it a more premium feel than you might expect from a full-size pickup.
For buyers who want a truck that can handle work, family duty, and a more luxurious daily drive, this model year fits that brief well. 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Ford F-150 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a truck that feels dependable in everyday use, with many owners describing it as comfortable and capable over time. The expert evaluation also notes that the F-150 rates better than average for reliability, and the powertrain is described as terrific and confidence-inspiring.
Ford also includes free 911 Assist through Sync, which can automatically contact emergency responders if the airbags deploy. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that age, mileage, and maintenance history can matter a lot, especially on higher-mileage trucks.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford F-150?
At 65.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has higher mileage or visible wear. Pay close attention to body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the truck’s equipment still works as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from XL through Limited, and the Limited trim is positioned as the most luxurious version with upscale materials and a more premium appearance. The base XL is much more work-focused, so you should expect fewer comfort and appearance upgrades there.
- Powertrain: The standard twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 delivers 365 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, and it is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It is described as powerful, responsive, and capable of strong towing and payload performance.
- Safety package: Ford offers adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and brake support, plus blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and a lane-keeping system. Some of these features are available rather than standard, so you should confirm equipment on the exact truck you are considering.
- Infotainment: Sync 3 uses a capacitive touch display with swipe capability, improved voice recognition, Siri compatibility, and Wi-Fi software updates. Navigation is optional, and the system is a meaningful upgrade over the older setup.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says this truck should return 17 mpg combined, and the expert test loop returned 16.7 mpg.
Which 2016 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?
The 2016 Ford F-150 is offered in 6 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- XL: This is the work-focused starting point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the F-150 lineup. You give up the upscale touches and premium equipment that define the higher trims.
- XLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more everyday comfort and convenience without jumping all the way to luxury pricing. It is the trim to target if you want a balanced used F-150.
- Lariat: This is the step-up choice if you want a more premium cabin and more features than the XLT. It suits buyers who want a nicer daily driver without going all the way to the top end.
- King Ranch: This trim leans into a more distinctive upscale personality and is for buyers who want a richer, more distinctive truck experience. It makes sense if style and comfort matter more than value.
- Platinum: This is the near-luxury choice for shoppers who want a high-end feel and a more polished presentation. It is a strong fit if you want premium features but do not need the absolute top trim.
- Limited: This is the flagship and the most luxurious version, with the richest materials and the most upscale presentation. It is the right pick if you want the most premium F-150 experience and are willing to pay for it.
The safety content notes that the truck is ineligible for the Top Safety Pick+ rating without automatic emergency braking.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford F-150?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,337 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.43% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,887, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Ford F-150's resale value?
The current average of $18,960 sits slightly below last year's $20,263.
That softer pricing trend suggests the truck has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help limit near-term downside for a future seller. If you buy well and keep the truck in strong condition, you may be better positioned than someone who paid closer to the prior-year average.
Demand should remain supported by the model’s strong reputation, broad appeal, and high owner satisfaction. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Ford F-150 safe?
The 2016 Ford F-150 earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a four-star rollover resistance rating.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford includes 911 Assist through Sync, which can automatically call emergency responders if the airbags deploy. Available driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and brake support, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and a lane-keeping system.
One caveat is that the truck is not eligible for the Top Safety Pick+ rating because it lacks automatic emergency braking. The expert review also notes that the lane-keeping and forward-collision warning systems can issue occasional false alerts.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.43% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 adds Sync 3 and Pro Trailer Backup Assist, which make it feel more modern and easier to live with.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $17,711, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $18,960 average.
- It introduced aluminum body construction and turbocharged power, giving the truck a distinctly modern feel.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $21,549, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $18,960 average.
- It brings back the Raptor with serious off-road hardware and a major power upgrade.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of luxury, capability, and updated tech, the 2016 is the smart target. If price matters most, the 2015 can save you money, while the 2017 makes more sense if you specifically want the Raptor-era upgrade path.
