Is the 2016 Ford F-150 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a truck that many drivers find dependable, with praise for comfort, power, and features that hold up well in everyday use. The expert review also notes that the F-150 rates better than average for reliability, which supports the idea that it can be a solid long-term ownership choice. Ford’s 911 Assist adds a useful ownership perk by automatically dialing emergency responders after an airbag deployment without requiring a monthly subscription. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is age-related wear, especially on higher-mileage trucks where maintenance history matters more.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford F-150?

At 66.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has higher mileage or visible wear. Focus on condition, prior repairs, and whether the truck’s equipment still works as intended, since used examples can vary widely in how they were treated. It’s also worth comparing trim content carefully, because the F-150’s appeal changes a lot depending on how much luxury and technology you want.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The F-150 is offered in XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited trim levels. The XL is the most basic starting point, while the Limited adds a clearly upscale look with 22-inch wheels, satin-finish accents, Mojave leather, genuine eucalyptus wood, and aluminum trim. If you want the best-value balance of equipment and price, the XLT and Lariat are the trims most likely to make sense before you step into the more expensive luxury-focused versions.
• Powertrain: The truck is available with a standard twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, and the lineup also includes two turbocharged V6 engines or a V8 engine. The EcoBoost setup delivers strong torque, confident acceleration, and an EPA estimate of 17 mpg combined.
• Safety package: Ford offers adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and brake support, plus blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and a lane-keeping system. Some of these features are available rather than standard, so trim choice matters if you want the full driver-assistance suite.
• Infotainment: Sync 3 brings a capacitive touch display with swipe capability, improved voice recognition, Siri compatibility, and Wi-Fi software updates. Navigation is available with pinch-to-zoom capability, and Ford also offers useful tech such as a 360-degree camera system and Pro Trailer Backup Assist.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA says the truck should return 17 mpg combined, and the test loop returned 16.7 mpg.

Which 2016 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?

Here's the short version:

• XL: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the F-150’s core capability without paying for luxury extras. It’s the trim to consider if your priority is keeping purchase price down.
• XLT: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds more everyday comfort and convenience without jumping into the high-priced luxury end of the lineup.
• Lariat: This is the right step up if you want a more upscale cabin and more premium-feeling equipment while still staying below the top luxury trims.
• King Ranch: This trim leans into a more distinctive upscale personality and suits buyers who want a richer interior and a more premium truck experience.
• Platinum: This is for shoppers who want a near-luxury feel and are willing to pay for it.
• Limited: This is the most luxurious version, with 22-inch wheels, satin-finish accents, Mojave leather, genuine eucalyptus wood, and a very upscale presentation. It’s the trim to buy if you want the most premium F-150 experience.

• Deal availability: 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 6,529 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.99% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 66.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $18,881, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Ford F-150's resale value?

The current average of $18,893 sits slightly below last year's $20,096.

That decline suggests the market has become a little more buyer-friendly, which can help you if you’re shopping now but may pressure future resale values if prices keep easing. For a seller, the current trend means you may need to price competitively to stand out, especially against the large pool of listings. Trucks with strong equipment, clean history, and desirable trims should still draw attention faster than higher-mileage or rougher examples.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Ford F-150 safe?

The Ford F-150 earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a four-star rollover resistance rating, and the IIHS calls it a Top Safety Pick.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford includes 911 Assist through Sync, which can automatically contact emergency responders after an airbag deployment. Available driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and brake support, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and a lane-keeping system. One caveat is that the truck is not eligible for Top Safety Pick+ because it does not have automatic emergency braking, and the lane-keeping and forward-collision systems can issue occasional false warnings.

Should I buy a 2016 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 66.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.99% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 adds Sync 3 and Pro Trailer Backup Assist, giving it a more modern tech setup.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $17,714, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $18,893 average.
• It emphasizes aluminum-body innovation and broad everyday versatility.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $21,331, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $18,893 average.
• It brings back the Raptor with serious off-road intent and major performance upgrades.

The bottom line: The 2016 is the better pick if you want a luxury-leaning F-150 with strong tech, broad trim choice, and a softer used-market price than the 2017. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2015 can save you money, while the 2017 makes sense if you specifically want the Raptor-focused upgrade path.
