What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford F-150?

At 65.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has higher mileage or visible wear. Focus on how the truck was used, whether maintenance was kept up, and whether any prior damage was repaired cleanly. Condition matters a lot here because the market includes a wide range of trims, equipment levels, and usage histories.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup spans XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited, with the Limited positioned as the luxury-focused version. Base-trim trucks are much more work-oriented, while higher trims add the upscale materials and features that make this truck feel more premium.
• Powertrain: The truck is offered with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, and the lineup also includes two turbocharged V6 engines or a V8 engine. The EcoBoost setup is described as strong and responsive, with 365 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque.
• Safety package: Ford offers adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and brake support, plus blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and a lane-keeping system. 911 Assist is included through Sync, and some features are available rather than standard.
• Infotainment: Sync 3 brings a capacitive touch display, swipe capability, improved voice recognition, and Wi-Fi software updates. Navigation is available, and Ford says the system is faster than the one it replaced.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA says the truck should return 17 mpg combined, and the test loop returned 16.7 mpg.

Which 2016 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?

The 2016 Ford F-150 is offered in 6 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• XL: This is the work-focused starting point, and it makes sense if you want the F-150 basics without paying for luxury extras. It’s the trim to consider if your priority is utility and you plan to add only the equipment you actually need.
• XLT: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds more everyday comfort and convenience without jumping into the expensive luxury end of the lineup. If you want a balanced used F-150, this is the trim to start with.
• Lariat: This trim moves you into a more upscale experience and is a good fit if you want a nicer cabin and more premium feel. It suits buyers who want comfort to matter as much as capability.
• King Ranch: This is for shoppers who want a more distinctive, upscale truck with a stronger luxury lean. It makes sense if you want the F-150 to feel special without going all the way to the top.
• Platinum: This trim is aimed at buyers who want a high-end truck with a polished, premium presentation. It’s a strong choice if you care most about refinement and features.
• Limited: This is the luxury flagship, with the most upscale presentation and the richest materials. It’s the right pick if you want the most premium version and are comfortable paying for it.

The safety content notes that some driver-assistance features are available rather than standard, so check equipment carefully by trim.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford F-150?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without assuming every listing is a bargain.

• Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 6,459 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.10% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 65.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $18,695, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Ford F-150's resale value?

The current average of $18,695 sits slightly below last year's $19,910.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that pricing pressure has eased, so condition, trim, and mileage will matter even more when you go to list the truck. Well-kept examples should still draw interest because the model has strong appeal and broad demand.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Ford F-150 safe?

The Ford F-150 earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a 4-star rollover resistance rating, and the IIHS calls it a Top Safety Pick.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford includes 911 Assist through Sync, and the truck is available with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, brake support, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and a lane-keeping system. One important caveat is that the truck is not eligible for Top Safety Pick+ because it lacks automatic emergency braking. The lane-keeping and forward-collision systems can also issue occasional false warnings.

Should I buy a 2016 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.10% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds Sync 3, Pro Trailer Backup Assist, and a luxury-leaning Limited trim.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $17,536, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $18,695 average.
• It emphasizes aluminum-body innovation and broad configurability.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $21,196, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $18,695 average.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, features, and broad used-market availability, the 2016 is the strongest starting point. If you’re focused on saving money, the 2015 is the better value play. If you want the more performance-focused direction, the 2017 is the one to compare.
