Is the 2016 Ford F-150 reliable?

For used buyers, the main risk is age-related wear, especially on higher-mileage trucks where maintenance history matters more.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford F-150?

At 66.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has towing, off-road, or heavy-use miles. Focus on body condition, interior wear, and signs of hard use, since those clues can tell you more than the odometer alone. If a truck is priced near the low end of the market, make sure the condition supports the discount.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup ranges from XL through Limited, and the Limited trim is positioned as the luxury-focused version with upscale materials and a more premium appearance. Base-trim trucks are much more work-oriented, so you should expect fewer comfort and appearance upgrades there.
• Powertrain: The truck uses a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with 365 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and manual shift control. It is described as strong, responsive, and capable of delivering 17 mpg combined.
• Safety package: Ford offers adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and brake support, plus blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and a lane-keeping system. Some of these features are available rather than standard, so you should confirm equipment carefully on the truck you are considering.
• Infotainment: Sync 3 brings a capacitive touch display with swipe capability, improved voice recognition, Siri compatibility, and Wi-Fi software updates. Navigation is optional, and the system is described as quicker and easier to use than the one it replaced.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA says this truck should return 17 mpg combined, and the expert test loop returned 16.7 mpg.

Which 2016 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?

The 2016 Ford F-150 is offered in 6 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Limited.

Here's the short version:

• XL: This is the work-focused starting point, and it makes the most sense if you want the lowest entry price and do not need luxury extras.
• XLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more everyday comfort and convenience without pushing you into the high-priced luxury end of the lineup.
• Lariat: This is the right step up if you want a more upscale cabin and more premium-feeling equipment while still staying below the top luxury trims.
• King Ranch: This trim leans into a more distinctive premium personality, making it a good fit if you want a richer interior and a more upscale truck feel.
• Platinum: This is for buyers who want a near-luxury experience and are willing to pay for more refined materials and a more polished presentation.
• Limited: This is the top luxury choice, with the most upscale detailing and the strongest premium appeal; it is the trim to buy if you want the most lavish version of the truck.

The safety package includes adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and brake support, plus blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-keeping assist, but some of those features are not standard across the lineup.

If you find a listing below $18,874, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Ford F-150's resale value?

The current average of $18,874 sits slightly below last year's $20,129.

That softer pricing suggests the truck has already absorbed some of its near-term depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. For a seller, that means condition, mileage, and equipment will matter a lot when it comes time to list the truck again. Well-kept examples should hold up better than trucks with visible wear or accident history.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Ford F-150 safe?

The 2016 Ford F-150 earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star rollover resistance ratings for both 2WD and 4WD models.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford includes Sync-based 911 Assist, which can automatically contact emergency responders if the airbags deploy and a paired device is in the vehicle. Available driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and brake support, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and a lane-keeping system. The expert review also notes that the lane-keeping and forward-collision warning systems can produce occasional false alerts.

The truck is not eligible for IIHS Top Safety Pick+ because it does not have automatic emergency braking.

Should I buy a 2016 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 66.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.24% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 adds Sync 3 and Pro Trailer Backup Assist, giving it a more modern tech setup.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $17,718, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $18,874 average.
• It introduced aluminum body construction and turbocharged power.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $21,330, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $18,874 average.
• It brings back the Raptor with serious off-road hardware and a 450-hp twin-turbo V6.

The bottom line: The 2016 is the right pick if you want a well-equipped F-150 with strong satisfaction scores, modern tech, and a softer used-market price than newer examples. If your priority is saving money, the 2015 is the better value play; if you want the most specialized performance-oriented version, the 2017 is the one to chase.
