Why it stands out
The 2016 Dodge Durango stands out by offering rear-wheel drive and serious towing capacity in a market dominated by crossovers. That combination gives it a more truck-like character than many family-oriented rivals, and it helps explain why it remains one of the stronger choices for buyers who want utility with a bit more attitude.
For 2016, Dodge added several updates aimed at sharpening the Durango’s appeal. Every trim gets fresh wheels, four additional exterior color options, and a Sport driving mode that quickens steering and throttle response while holding gears longer. The R/T trim also gains new 20-inch wheels, ventilated and heated Nappa leather seats, a heated power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, an 8-way power passenger seat, auto wipers, HID headlights, and navigation with an 8.4-inch touchscreen. Anodized Platinum and Brass Monkey appearance packages are also available for the Citadel and Limited trims, and a standard stop/start feature helps improve the efficiency of the V6.
At the same time, the Durango’s appeal is more about character and capability than outright efficiency. The added sport mode and appearance changes give it a more distinctive personality, but the core draw is still its uncommon blend of RWD and towing strength in a three-row package.

The features are GREAT !!! I am still trying to learn them all but I am having a hard time finding the power folding exterior windows. It should also have power folding rear seating. Great vehicle, the view from the driver seat is great if you are a short person.

How much does the 2016 Dodge Durango cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $13,653 |
| Year-Round Low | $13,481 |
| Year-Round High | $14,462 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,251 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.20% |
Prices have softened 4.20% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 916 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.
Is the 2016 Dodge Durango a good car?
Yes — it earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating.
The standout strength is Safety at 8/10.
The 2016 Durango stands out because you get rear-wheel drive and serious towing capacity in a three-row package, which gives it a more truck-like character than many family crossovers. That makes it a strong fit if you want utility with a bit more attitude rather than a softer, efficiency-first SUV.
29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Dodge Durango reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Durango’s appeal here is tied to its capability-first design and the fact that the V6 version pairs respectable efficiency with up to 6,200 pounds of towing capacity. The expert notes also point to the standard stop/start feature as part of the 2016 efficiency push, which helps the V6 side of the lineup feel more modern.
If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is that the Durango’s heavier build can mean more wear on tires, brakes, and suspension parts over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Dodge Durango?
At 60.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually strong. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment on the truck matches the trim and option content you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SXT includes 18-inch alloys, heated mirrors, auto headlights, keyless ignition and entry, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, load-leveling rear suspension, cruise control, 3-row climate controls, fog lamps, and a 5-inch Uconnect touchscreen. Higher trims add features like remote ignition, leather, power seats, heated second-row seating, navigation, upgraded audio, and more appearance content, so base-trim shoppers should check carefully for missing convenience and safety equipment.
- Powertrain: The standard setup is a 3.6-liter V6 with an 8-speed automatic, and it’s paired with rear-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. The V6 is rated at 19 mpg city and 26 highway, and it can tow up to 6,200 pounds. The R/T uses a 5.7-liter V8 with 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque, and it can tow up to 7,400 pounds.
- Safety package: The available Safety/Security & Convenience Group adds blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, auto HID headlights, wipers, a power-adjustable steering wheel, and a cargo cover with net. The Technology Group adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning and avoidance, and blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, but those features are not standard on lower trims.
- Infotainment: The Uconnect system starts with a 5-inch touchscreen, and the upgraded Uconnect 8.4 adds an 8.4-inch touchscreen, voice controls, satellite radio, and emergency telematics. The tech package also adds Siri Eyes Free and a Do Not Disturb feature, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not included.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 returns 19 mpg city and 26 highway, while the V8 is rated at 14 mpg city and 22 highway.
Which 2016 Dodge Durango trim should I buy?
The 2016 Dodge Durango is offered in 5 trim levels: SXT, Limited, Citadel, R/T, and SXT.
Here's the short version:
- SXT: This is the value play if you want the Durango’s core character without paying for extras. You still get the 18-inch alloys, keyless entry and ignition, Uconnect with a 5-inch touchscreen, and the basic family-friendly hardware, but you’ll want to verify whether the options you care about were added.
- Limited: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a strong mix of comfort and convenience, including remote ignition, leather, power passenger-seat adjustment, heated second-row seating, LED running lights, driver memory settings, and more available tech and appearance upgrades.
- Citadel: Choose this if you want a more upscale Durango with more standard luxury content, including additional leather, upgraded brakes, 20-inch wheels, ventilation for the front seats, and a 9-speaker stereo, plus more available safety and entertainment upgrades.
- R/T: This is the performance-oriented choice, with the 5.7-liter V8, sport suspension, Nappa leather, performance steering tuning, and the strongest towing capability in the lineup. It suits you best if power and towing matter more than fuel economy.
The Safety/Security & Convenience Group is not available for the SXT, so shoppers who want those driver-assistance features should look higher in the lineup or verify option content carefully.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Dodge Durango?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing softness to reward careful shopping.
- Deal availability: 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 916 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.20% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,481, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Dodge Durango's resale value?
The current average of $13,653 sits slightly below last year's $14,251.
That softer pricing trend suggests the Durango is still a value-oriented buy today, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to move the vehicle. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Dodge Durango safe?
The 2016 Dodge Durango earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA tests, with five-star ratings in side impacts.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Durango includes 4-wheel antilock discs, stability control, traction control, trailer sway control, and a full airbag suite with front side, driver knee, and full-length curtain airbags. The available Safety/Security & Convenience Group adds blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, auto HID headlights, wipers, a power-adjustable steering wheel, and a cargo cover with net, while the Technology Group adds adaptive cruise control and forward-collision warning and avoidance.
One caveat is that several useful driver-assistance features are not standard on lower trims, so you should verify option content carefully if safety tech matters to you.
Should I buy a 2016 Dodge Durango or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.20% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 adds a Sport driving mode, fresh wheels, more exterior colors, and an updated R/T feature set.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $14,889, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $13,653 average.
- It adds a more function-focused cabin with a rugged character and well-equipped family utility.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2016 is the stronger starting point because pricing has softened and inventory is broad enough to shop selectively. If you’re willing to spend more for the next model year, the 2017 is the better path for buyers who want a newer example and don’t mind paying above the current-year average.
