What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW X1?

At 60.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or a long option list. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, tire wear, brake feel, and whether the electronics and driver-assistance features work as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The X1 is described as a proper luxury SUV with clean exterior styling, a minimal BMW interior, soft-touch lower dashboard panels, and optional stitched brown leather trim; the base setup is notably sparse, with many comfort items reserved for options.
• Powertrain: It uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive.
• Safety package: The car includes lane-departure warning, forward-collision alert, and auto braking with pedestrian detection; adaptive cruise control is available, while blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist are not.
• Infotainment: The navigation system has clear graphics, single-string voice commands, handwriting recognition, and an available split-screen display; the Technology package includes a 3-year data plan.
• Fuel efficiency: It is rated at 22 mpg city/32 highway, and the review notes 26 mpg over 300 miles in testing.

Which 2016 BMW X1 trim should I buy?

Here's the short version:

The xDrive28i: This is the only trim, so your decision is really about options rather than trim stepping. It gives you the core X1 formula: the turbocharged four-cylinder, standard AWD, strong driving dynamics, and the clean BMW cabin layout. If you want the best balance of capability and value, this is the one to target, then shop carefully for the option packages that matter most to you.

The safety package note is straightforward: the X1 includes lane-departure warning, forward-collision alert, and auto braking with pedestrian detection, but blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist are not included.

What is the 2016 BMW X1's resale value?

The current average of $11,615 sits slightly below last year's $12,280.

That tells you the market has eased, which can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to move the car. The current range suggests the X1 still has a defined value band, so condition and equipment will matter when it comes time to resell.

Should I buy a 2016 BMW X1 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.42% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 X1 is a redesigned model that brings a more polished luxury-SUV feel while still driving with the kind of balance BMW buyers expect.

The bottom line: If you want the redesigned X1’s blend of utility, premium feel, and strong driving manners, the 2016 is the right target. If you’re shopping mainly on price, you can still find value here, but you should be selective about condition and equipment because many desirable features were optional.
