Why it stands out
The 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser stands out as a rugged, retro-styled SUV with genuine off-road hardware underneath its distinctive body. It was the first and only generation of the model, and Toyota sent it off in North America with a Trail Teams Ultimate Edition for 2014 that added upgraded suspension components, bead-lock wheels, chunky off-road tires, a beefier skid plate package, and Heritage Blue paint. That combination of durability, special-edition character, and serious trail equipment is a big part of what made the FJ Cruiser memorable.
It also had practical strengths that fit its adventurous image. The rear-hinged doors created an entry point without pillars when opened with the front doors, and folding the rear seat down opened up 66.8 cubic feet of cargo space. The SUV could tow up to 5,000 pounds, and its two-speed transfer case with low-range gearing, good ground clearance, comparatively short wheelbase, and available off-road packages made it especially appealing to outdoor buyers. Owners also tend to praise its reliability and off-road ability, while the main drawbacks are familiar ones: poor fuel economy, a cramped back seat, and poor visibility.
For 2014 specifically, the FJ Cruiser used a 4.0-liter V6 rated at 260 hp and 271 lb-ft. That powertrain helped support the truck’s durable, go-anywhere personality, but it also came with the tradeoff of modest efficiency. In its most fuel-efficient form with a five-speed automatic transmission, EPA estimates were 17 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined.

I love these trucks and recommend them highly as very good quality and has reliability. I already own three of these. Retains value more than any truck I know of and this was true throughout their years of production and beyond.

The FJ is an iconic tank! The design and over-engineering than went into the FJ is like no other Toyota I’ve own. We currently have a 2023 4Runner ORP, 2020 Tundra Limited OR, and a 2020 Tacoma OR…I’ll choose the FJ to drive any chance I get! No wonder the cult following and amazing resale/retention of value! Buy a clean, well maintained 2014 FJ while you can, very few left I could find that checked these boxes.

How much does the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $29,049 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,240.84 |
| Year-Round High | $30,322.45 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $30,024 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.25% |
Prices have softened 3.25% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 126 listings available, which suggests you have some room to compare options before making a move.
If you find a listing below $28,240.84, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to very strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its great driving experience, reliability, and strong off-road capabilities, and many also like that it holds its value well over time. If you want a rugged SUV with a clear off-road focus and a distinctive personality, the FJ Cruiser fits that use case well. With 25.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have a meaningful chance to find attractive pricing.
Is the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as reliable and dependable, and the feedback also points to a trouble-free ownership experience for many buyers. That kind of owner confidence matters if you plan to keep the vehicle for the long haul. For used buyers, the main risk is less about the model’s reputation and more about how well a specific example was maintained and used.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser?
At 69% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with prior damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the SUV has seen off-road use or shows signs of hard wear. Focus on overall condition, maintenance consistency, and evidence of how the vehicle was actually used.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser?
This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting a deep buyer's-market bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 126 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.25% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,240.84, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser's resale value?
The current average of $29,049 sits slightly below last year's $30,024.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy with less risk of overpaying. For a future seller, the softer trend means resale gains may be harder to realize in the short term unless your vehicle is especially clean, well maintained, and attractively priced. Even so, the model's strong owner satisfaction and loyal demand base can help support value over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
If you want the FJ Cruiser's rugged character, off-road focus, and strong owner approval, the 2014 is a solid primary choice. If you're especially price-sensitive, keep shopping carefully and compare clean, well-priced examples across nearby years so you can balance condition, history, and value before you buy.
