Is the 2014 Nissan Altima a good car?

The 2014 Nissan Altima is a practical choice if you want a comfortable, efficient midsize sedan rather than a sporty one. It earns 3.8/5 from owners and 7.8/10 from our experts.

The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its comfort, stylish interior, fuel efficiency, and sound system, which makes it appealing for commuting and everyday use. The overview also frames it as a safe, fuel-efficient, comfortable, and affordable daily driver, so its strengths line up well with what shoppers usually want from a family sedan.

The market shows 27.3% good and great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2014 Nissan Altima reliable?

The 2014 Altima is positioned as a cost-conscious sedan that can make sense for long-term ownership if you choose carefully. Owner feedback highlights comfort, fuel efficiency, and a solid commuter-friendly character, while also noting some repair needs that have led to mixed feelings about reliability.

The expert notes also point to better-than-average dependability over time, and the car’s cost-effectiveness is helped by strong fuel economy and favorable long-term ownership expenses. That said, the same guidance also points to mixed reliability predictions, so you should expect condition and maintenance history to matter a lot on the used market.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is ending up with a car that has been poorly maintained or already needs catch-up repairs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Nissan Altima?

At 46.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or incomplete service records. Focus on signs of prior body damage, uneven wear, and any evidence that repairs were done poorly. If you’re comparing multiple listings, condition should matter as much as price because the cheapest car may not be the best value.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.5 trim leaves out NissanConnect Apps, smart automatic headlights, and Nissan Intelligent Key passive entry, while higher trims add more convenience and comfort features. The 2.5 SV is the popular version, and the SL adds leather seats, a Bose premium audio system, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 182 hp and is paired with a CVT, while the 3.5-liter V6 adds more power and quicker acceleration at the cost of fuel economy. The 2.5 is the better fit if you want efficiency and everyday ease.
• Safety package: The available Technology Package adds navigation, Moving-Object Detection, Blind-Spot Warning, and Lane-Departure Warning on SV or SL trims. Those features are not part of the base setup, so you should check whether a listing has the package if driver assistance matters to you.
• Infotainment: Most versions use a 5-inch touchscreen with NissanConnect Apps, Bluetooth-linked smartphone apps, hands-free text messaging, and support for services like Pandora and iHeartRadio. A 7-inch display comes with the optional navigation system.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-liter engine returns 31 mpg in combined driving, while the 3.5-liter V6 returns 25 mpg in combined driving. During testing, the 2.5 also returned 28.5 mpg in heavy suburban use.

Which 2014 Nissan Altima trim should I buy?

The 2014 Nissan Altima is offered in 6 trim levels: 2.5 S, 2.5 SV, 2.5 SL, 3.5 S, 3.5 SV, 3.5 SL.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5 S: This is the entry point, and it adds useful everyday equipment like cruise control, a power driver’s seat, extra speakers, and passive entry over the base car. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost Altima with the core convenience features most shoppers will notice.
• 2.5 SV: This is the popular version and the best-value trim for many buyers because it adds 17-inch wheels, dual-zone climate control, a rearview camera, satellite radio, and NissanConnect Apps. If you want the sweet spot between price and features, this is the one to target.
• 2.5 SL: This is the most comfort-focused four-cylinder trim, with leather seats, a Bose audio system, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and more upscale cabin details. Choose it if you want the most premium-feeling Altima without moving to the V6.
• 3.5 S: This trim adds the V6, paddle shifters, and 18-inch wheels, so it is the choice for buyers who want more power and a more responsive feel. It suits you best if acceleration matters more than fuel economy.
• 3.5 SV: This version layers V6 power onto the SV’s equipment and adds a sunroof and other convenience upgrades. It is the right pick if you want stronger performance with a richer feature set.
• 3.5 SL: This is the top trim and adds high-intensity discharge headlights to the 3.5 SL’s already upscale equipment. It is the most fully equipped Altima in the lineup.

The Technology Package is available on SV and SL trims, and it adds navigation, Blind-Spot Warning, Lane-Departure Warning, and Moving-Object Detection.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Nissan Altima?

This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can find value if you compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 27.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,438 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.71% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 46.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $7,548, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Nissan Altima's resale value?

The current average of $7,625 sits slightly below last year's $8,001.

That decline suggests the market has softened, which can help you buy at a better entry price today. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim rather than assuming the car will hold its price automatically.

Because the year-over-year change is negative, a clean, well-kept example should stand out more than a rough one. If you maintain the car well and keep service records, you’ll be in a better position to protect value when it’s time to sell.

Is the 2014 Nissan Altima safe?

The 2014 Altima gets a five-star crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and is called a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The available Technology Package adds a navigation system, Moving-Object Detection, Blind-Spot Warning, and Lane-Departure Warning on SV or SL trims. Those features can meaningfully improve awareness, but they are not standard on every version.

The safety package is strongest on SV and SL trims, so you should verify whether a listing includes it if you want the extra driver-assistance coverage.

Should I buy a 2014 Nissan Altima or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 27.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 46.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.71% compared with last year.
• The 2014 Altima is safe, fuel-efficient, comfortable, and affordable, making it a practical daily driver.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $8,095, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $7,625 average.
• It adds more responsive handling and a more engaging all-around character.

The bottom line: If you want the lower-priced option and are focused on value, the 2014 is the better starting point. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model with a more engaging driving feel, the 2015 is worth a look.

How does the 2014 Nissan Altima compare to the 2014 Toyota Camry?

Our experts score the 2014 Nissan Altima 7.8/10 and the 2014 Toyota Camry 7.5/10.

The Altima gives you the stronger expert score, better fuel economy, and a lower average used price, while the Camry has a slightly higher share of good and great deals and a slightly higher accident-free share. If you want the better value on paper, the Altima is the more compelling pick; if you want a broader pool of cleaner listings, the Camry has a small edge.
