What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Mazda MAZDA3?

At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or any signs of uneven panel gaps, paint mismatch, or suspension wear. Because some listings have prior incidents, condition matters more than mileage alone. It also helps to confirm that the equipment you want is actually present, since feature content varies a lot by trim.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup spans SV, Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring, with the Touring trim adding aluminum wheels, heated side mirrors, keyless passive entry with push-button start, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitoring, and nicer interior and exterior trim. It also unlocks many desirable options, while the Grand Touring trims add leatherette upholstery, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, or, on the more powerful version, genuine perforated leather seats, a power sunroof, automatic headlights, an Adaptive Front Lighting System, and rain-sensing wipers.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque in the Mazda 3i trims, or a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque in the Mazda 3s models. The smaller engine is described as smooth, refined, quiet, and sprightly, while the larger engine is more powerful but comes with a $5,000 premium.
• Safety package: Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are standard on the 3i Touring, while the 3i Grand Touring adds a reversing camera and E911 Automatic Emergency Notification service. The 3s Grand Touring adds rain-sensing wipers and an Adaptive Front Lighting System, and Lane Departure Warning plus Smart City Brake Support are offered only on the 3s Grand Touring.
• Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses a 7-inch touchscreen with a center-console control dial, and it includes smartphone integration, text-messaging capability, E911 service, and access to Aha, Pandora, and Stitcher. The system also offers mobile Wi-Fi access, but the touch icons are disabled once the car is moving.
• Fuel efficiency: The Mazda 3 Sedan is rated at 32 to 34 mpg in combined driving, while the 5-Door is expected to return 31 to 33 mpg. The expert review also says owners are likely to easily extract better than 30 mpg in real-world use.

Which 2014 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?

The 2014 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 4 trim levels: SV, Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.

Here's the short version:

• SV: This is the simplest starting point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Mazda 3 lineup and do not need the extra convenience and safety features found higher up.
• Sport: This trim is the value-minded choice if you want the core Mazda 3 driving experience without paying for the more feature-rich Touring and Grand Touring equipment.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds aluminum wheels, heated side mirrors, keyless passive entry with push-button start, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitoring, and access to many of the car’s most desirable options.
• Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the most upscale version of the Mazda 3i, with leatherette upholstery, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, and the broadest feature set.

The safety-package trim note is simple: the most advanced driver-assistance features, including Lane Departure Warning and Smart City Brake Support, are reserved for the 3s Grand Touring.

What is the 2014 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?

The current average of $10,115 sits slightly below last year's $10,127.

That small decline suggests the market has been stable rather than volatile, which is usually helpful if you plan to sell later. A steady price pattern can make it easier to estimate your car’s future value and avoid sharp depreciation surprises.

The model’s strong owner satisfaction also helps support demand in the used market. Buyers tend to respond well to cars that are known for engaging driving dynamics, good fuel efficiency, and a comfortable ride.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?

The 2014 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

It earns a strong safety package with Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, a reversing camera on higher trims, E911 Automatic Emergency Notification service, rain-sensing wipers, an Adaptive Front Lighting System, Lane Departure Warning, and Smart City Brake Support on the upper trims. Rear parking assist sensors are also offered for any model.

There are trim-level gaps to keep in mind: some of the most useful driver-assistance features are not standard across the lineup, so you should verify the exact equipment on any used listing before you buy.

Should I buy a 2014 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It offers broad trim, body-style, and powertrain variety, from basic commuter setups to well-equipped versions with advanced tech.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $11,071, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $10,115 average.
• It feels more premium and is described as a strong all-around package with refinement, practicality, safety ratings, reliability, and fun.

The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2014 is the smarter starting point because pricing is stable and the market still offers a meaningful share of good deals. If you are willing to pay more for a newer model with a more premium feel, the 2015 is the better upgrade path.
