FAQs
While the 2014 GMC Sierra 2500HD is a more-than-capable heavy-duty three-quarter-ton full-size pickup, in this class of work-oriented transportation, brand loyalty and just plain looks are often the deciding factors for buyers. Anyway, Jimmy’s entry-level HD truck, which shares its platform with Chevy’s Silverado 2500HD, has dropped the Extended Cab for this year and now comes only in Regular Cab and Crew Cab iterations, but it remains ready to tow up to 17,800 pounds on a fifth-wheel rig and once again offers available turbodiesel power. No other significant changes are noted for 2014.
Regular Cab versions of the Jimmy 2500HD seat 3 and tote only the 8.2-foot long bed. Crew Cab editions sport 4 independently opening doors, seat 6 and can be delivered with either the long bed or the standard-length 6.6-foot-bed configuration. Trim levels, meanwhile, begin with the relatively basic Work Truck (WT), then move upward to the feature-laden SLE and the top-shelf SLT. The WT and SLE are available in either Regular Cab or Crew Cab garb, while the top-shelf SLT is delivered only in Crew Cab configuration. Meantime, all trim levels are once again delivered with standard rear-wheel drive (RWD), but all are, of course, also available with part-time, on-demand four-wheel drive (4WD).
As is traditional for these big rigs, Jimmy’s 2500HD lineup flaunts sturdy body-on-frame construction for outsized jobs. Bearing in mind that the Sierra 2500HD is going to drive like a truck, jittering and jiving with an empty bed, owners might find a towing capacity of up to 13,000 pounds with the available heavy-duty hitch and wiring a bit more palatable, while payload capacity remains over 4,000 pounds.
Meanwhile, a potent 6.0-liter Flex Fuel V8 powerplant returns as the standard motivating factor in the Sierra 2500HD lineup. Under the management of the standard 6-speed automatic transmission, this big mill puts out 360 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, this gas-burning V8 can be delivered in a CNG (compressed natural gas)/LNG (liquid natural gas) version that runs cleaner, but drops performance numbers to 301 hp and 333 lb-ft of torque.
The 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8 is once again available to all trims and, for the past couple of years now, has been tweaked to burn green-leaning biodiesel fuel. Once again running with the heavy-duty Allison 1000 6-speed automatic transmission, this blown diesel throws down 397 hp and 765 lb-ft of torque. Of course, all powerplants feature auxiliary transmission cooling, and the automatic transmissions boast standard hill-start assist, while 4WD-equipped editions have auto-locking hubs, an electronic locking rear differential and either electronic or manual hi-lo gear selection. Mileage figures, by the way, are unavailable for either engine, but, hey, it’s a truck, so the numbers won’t be pretty.
Anyhow, decorating the exterior of the base WT Regular Cab are 17-inch steel wheels and chrome bumpers. Inside, look for vinyl upholstery, cruise control, tilt-wheel steering, air conditioning and an AM/FM stereo with 4 speakers. Again for this year, Crew Cab WT trims add remote power door locks, split-folding rear seats and a pair of additional speakers.
The SLE trim level, meantime, throws in 17-inch alloy wheels, premium cloth upholstery and full power accessories, including heated power-adjustable outside mirrors, as well as floor mats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Again this midlevel version also flaunts a single-CD player, satellite radio and auxiliary MP3 input, not to mention OnStar Directions and Connections subscription services.
The top-shelf SLT continues its princely tradition with 18-inch polished alloy wheels, reverse-tilt outside mirrors, leather upholstery, simulated wood cabin accents and heated power-adjustable front seats. This loaded-up trim level also sports standard dual-zone climate control with Sun Sensor technology as well as driver memory settings, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, 7 Bose premium speakers, a USB port and Bluetooth-integrated OnStar hands-free calling.
As is usual, options for lower trim levels include many of those items found standard in higher trim levels, with stuff like an available heavy-duty towing hitch and wiring, an integrated trailer brake controller, a fifth-wheel towing rig, multiple bed-mounted cargo management configurations and a Snowplow Prep Package available throughout the lineup. Upsized and upgraded wheels, a spray-in bedliner, power-adjustable pedals, GM’s touted Z71 Off-Road Package (4WD trims only), rear parking sensors, an EZ-lift tailgate, hard-drive-based navigation and a rear-view camera are all available to this hefty Jimmy pickup, depending on the trim level chosen, while the SLT can, furthermore, be delivered with an available power sunroof and/or rear-seat DVD entertainment.
Again for 2014, notable standard safety equipment aboard the Sierra 2500HD lineup includes 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), as well as standard traction and stability control. Front side-mounted airbags and front (and in Crew Cabs, rear) head airbags are optional throughout the lineup, but front dashboard- and steering-wheel-mounted airbags and daytime running lights remain standard for all editions. The SLE and SLT each return with standard OnStar emergency assistance, while the WT Crew Cab and all other trim levels get delivered with a remote antitheft alarm. Finally, the high-end SLT is additionally equipped with standard turn-signal-integrated mirrors, a post-collision safety system and front fog/driving lights.
