Used 2013 Ford C-Max Energi SEL FWD for Sale near Irvine, CA
4.5 Overall rating
(2 reviews)A new driving experience. Around town I just use the electric mode. Good acceleration, braking and handling. Have the MyTouch system and find it pretty useful so far and not as buggy as I had heard. Fit and finish is great. Lots of space inside with the higher roof line. Getting use to the range on battery. Heating and cooling draw down the battery faster. You can actually see the numbers on the range estimate change when you toggle the climate system off and on. GPS has been pretty good so far. A few little quirks in finding a destination and entering it. Nice that you can turn off voice directions.
We've had the 2013 C-Max Energi over 18 months now; we purchased a Leviton Level 2 EV charger (230v, 32amp - should have bought a 40-amp) to achieve the highest mileage, since mos of our daytime trips don't allow enough charge time using the 110v charger that comes with the car. Most recent fill-up went 3,726 miles on less than 14 gallons, so it got about 287 mpg - took some learning how to drive gingerly to achieve highest efficiency. We've listed all our mileage on Fuelly dot com. Without consistent charging it's gotten as little as 70 mpg (we think part was due to our new-car-excitement, hadn't bought the Level II charger yet, and learning how to get the most out of the car). Without charging the batteries, just the gas engine alone would get mid-40 mpg's, so the more often you can charge it, and taking trips less than 30 miles your engine will rarely come on. Also, the engine comes on to heat the car, so the engine occasionally runs when it otherwise would not need to. This vehicle is SO much nicer, quieter, and more fun to drive than our former 2010 Prius Five, it's hard to consider them in the same class. The electric motor will go up to 85 mph, but the faster you go the quicker it burns up the charge on the plug-in batteries (we live in TX where the speed limits are 75 to 80 on some roads). Battery goes furthest driving 45 to 55 mph. Once you run out of battery the gas motor kicks on for a while, which then charges the battery back up and the gas engine will run for a while until enough charge accumulates; basically it reverts to Hybrid mode - so once the battery charges up again the gas engine cuts off. Ford hybrid system charges via three sources; regenerative braking, gas engine, and heat. Therefore, driving the route with traffic signals will get you further on battery than taking the toll road or freeway. This has been a great, reliable vehicle; didn't need an oil change until 20,000 miles and then only because 20k was the factory recommendation. On a single charge it'll go at least 20 miles, but easily into the high 20's if you don't push it hard. Using heat or A/C will diminish mileage, but while it's plugged in you can use the remote (or Internet via MyFord dot com) to pre-heat or pre-cool the vehicle. We have NOT noticed any increase in our electric usage on the electric bill. The Level II charger simply requires a 40-amp circuit breaker similar to your electric dryer, or stove, with 10-gage wire for up to about 60' run from the breaker box, as per the instructions that came with the unit. We really hope that Ford decides to incorporate this technology into other larger vehicles, and continues furthering this technology. Our C-Max hasn't been to the shop for any reason other than standard tire rotations, one oil change, and a recall that made it go even further on a single charge. I highly recommend the vehicle! With frequent charging it'll easily achieve 160 to 180 mpg, and best of all - electricity is produced locally in the USA, so the more often you charge it the more you avoid buying imported oil!
