The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo, introduced a couple of years ago as a hatchback in the 5 Series that holds the fort between the manufacturer’s 3 Series and 7 Series, might best be called a "Tweener Beemer." The 2012 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is not quite as large and roomy as the vehicles offered in the 7 Series and not quite as sporty and nimble as the sedans in the 5 Series. It does, however, pull positives from all angles and receive praise from reviewers for that as well as its versatility, though some have a hard time deciding just what to call it. It’s not a sedan and not quite a crossover and not a wagon, though it basically replaces the wagon in the BMW 5 Series in the United States: Thus, the "Tweener" designation. The hatchback on the 2012 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo and a longer wheelbase that came with a redesign for 2011 provide increased cargo space and also open things up impressively for those in the rear seats. Some reviewers even rave about the setup for those in back as “limo like.” BMW sends the 5 Series Gran Turismo out in trims differentiated by their engines and whether they have rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. It's offered as a 535i, 535i xDrive, 550i or 550i xDrive. xDrive is BMW’s all-wheel-drive system. A turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine that’s good for 300 hp gets the 535i around quite well. The 550i gets a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 at 400 hp. Both engines come standard with an 8-speed automatic transmission, with a 6-speed manual available. Performance and comfort both come along for the ride in the 2012 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo, keeping the vehicle in line with others in the BMW lineup. The GT may not be quite as agile and able in the corners as the sedans in the 5 Series, some reviewers note, but it is responsive and powerful enough for most needs. The turbo V6 gets the Gran Turismo to 60 mph in 7 seconds. Driving Dynamics Control, which BMW also offers in the M3 and 7 Series, allows the driver to pick settings for throttle, transmission, steering and traction control. The 2012 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo gets the to-be-expected BMW treatment when it comes to features and amenities in its classy cabin. Leather upholstery, power adjustable heated mirrors, sunroof, 8-way adjustable power seats, BMW Assist with roadside assistance and driving directions as well as Bluetooth-based hands-free communications technology are just some of the items that come standard. A wide range of packages is also available, from a Cold Weather to a Luxury Seating Package with much in between. An M Sport Package joins the list for 2012 and includes either 19- or 20-inch wheels and other performance enhancements. The manufacturer also offers BMW Apps, a system that features a variety of iPhone applications that can be run through the iDrive system. The 2012 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo scores well in government and insurance industry tests and gets a full array of airbags, an electronic stability system and four-wheel antilock disc brakes. The Adpative Drive system includes active roll stabilization, which is designed to counter body roll, along with custom settings for the drivetrain and suspension.
