The high-end midsize 2009 Volkswagen Passat reduces its lineup this year, ditching the Lux, Turbo, and VR6 trims and sticking with only the Komfort. Still available in both wagon and sedan form, the 2009 Passat adds standard paddle shifters on the steering wheel and offers a new optional rearview camera and three steering wheel choices.

The V6 engine has also been dropped, leaving power duties to the 16-valve, 2.0-liter turbo inline-four. Matched with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission (with normal and sport modes), the powertrain delivers 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque, with admirable fuel economy - it's rated around 20/29 mpg.

According to some users, the conservative-looking 2009 Passat actually hides quite a bit of satisfyingly sporty handling, and its characteristically upscale interior rivals that found in the Mercedes CLS. The Komfort trim features full power accessories, tilt and telescopic steering, a 6-CD changer with MP3 playback and satellite radio, leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, an 8-way power driver's seat, and a cooled storage compartment. A standard sunroof opens up the already spacious interior. Early owners report a comfortable ride in both front and back, with legroom totaling 41 inches up front and nearly 38 inches in back. Rear seats split-fold 60/40 and feature a trunk pass-through armrest. The sedan holds 14.2 cubic feet in its trunk, while the more practical wagon accommodates anywhere from 35.8 to 62 cubic feet of storage, with both an organizer and tiedowns providing added convenience.

Except for the lack of rear side airbags (offered as an option only), the 2009 Passat comes well equipped with safety features, matching its reputation for a safe and solid ride. Traction and stability control, dual front-side and side curtain airbags, 4-wheel ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution, mirrors with turn signals, and a tire monitor are all standard. The useful Hill Descent Control limits wear and tear on brakes.

For those wanting a bit more styling flair than the regularly staid 2009 Passat offers, several options dress it up in sporty fashion. Exterior add-ons include sport exhaust tips, several different spoilers, ground effects, and side sills. Looks aside, the 2009 Passat provides a nice blend of high-quality German engineering, decent fuel economy, and upscale comfort, making it versatile as both a family and personal car.
