Think of the XC70 as an SUV-like subspecies of the V70 that evolved into its own full-blown model. This model actually started out as a V70 trim back in '97 and then changed its name to the XC70 starting in 2003. In its sixth model year, the XC70 gets a new 3.2-liter inline-six engine with 235 horsepower and a six-speed automatic transmission. Other new features include more cargo space, booster seats for the kids, and new safety systems, such as Collision Warning and Brake Support to protect against rear-end accidents.

The '08 Volvo XC70 comes in one trim: the Cross Country. Gas mileage comes out to 15 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway. The lone trim has four doors, seats seven, and offers standard air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, power seats, a CD player, ABS brakes, traction control, and stability control. Options include a navigation system, leather seats, and a sunroof. Cargo volume comes out to 33.3 cubic feet, which exceeds the V70 by about 6 cubic feet. In addition, maximum towing capacity is 3,300 pounds. All in all, the XC70 has a lot in common with the V70, but is a little more rugged, with a slightly bigger engine and SUV-like feel.

Overall, the new booster seats and upgraded body make the XC70 a solid choice for small families on the go. The new engine adds pop, and the SUV-wagon mashup gives you more off-road options than the V70. The XC70 provides a solid all-around option for families looking to cruise the 'hood, fly down the highway, or trek into the wilderness.
