However, the price hike over the regular Highlander is considerable: The base price jumps by $10,000 with the addition of hybrid technology. The engine is mated to the electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (ECVT), in which regular toothed gears are replaced by a system of transistors. The hybrid's fuel economy is 32/27 mpg with 2WD and 31/27 with the 4WD system. One important caveat: This is not a real 4x4, and Toyota recommends keeping it on the pavement. The gas engine cannot provide power to the rear wheels, so this is not traditional all-wheel drive.
