Hauling up to 10,000 pounds of cargo doesn't necessarily call to mind the grassy open plains of Africa or the gentility and Southern charm of a South Carolina city, but the 2007 GMC Savana Cargo Van does come with lots of power choices and a segment-leading optional AWD capability. Available in both regular 135-inch and extended 155-inch wheelbase (2500 and 3500 only), the 2007 Savana Cargo comes in three trims, named to represent their tonnage. There are few changes this year, aside from an underbody heat shield and a new engine cover for the 2500 and 3500. The regular-wheelbase 1500 can carry up to 267 cubic feet, while the 3500 extended fits 317 cubic feet of cargo. Engine choices ranges from a V6 to a turbodiesel V8. All come with a four-speed automatic and ride on 16-inch wheels with a stiff pickup suspension. A 4.3-liter, 195-hp V6 sits in the 1500, while a 4.8-liter, 285-hp V8 is standard in the 2500. The 3500 comes with a 6.0-liter, 300-hp V8. An optional 6.6-liter, 250-hp V8 with 460 lb-ft of torque is available for the 2500 and 3500. The AWD option is offered only with the 1500 Cargo Van and comes with a 5.3-liter, 295-hp V8 that gets 330 lb-ft of torque. The 2007 Savana Cargo is strictly meant for commercial hauling. While its passenger-van counterpart can seat up to 12, the Cargo Van fits two in the front seat. A standard sliding passenger side door can be replaced with doors that open 60/40. An optional driver's side door, another innovation in this segment, is also offered. The van gets five-star frontal impact ratings thanks to standard ABS, Stabilitrak, and dual front airbags, but side airbags are not offered. Class-leading power and towing capacity (up to 10,000 pounds with the 3500) make the 2007 Savana Cargo Van a capable workhorse, though some owners wish the interior was a bit nicer.
