Recent updates to the exterior of the 2006 GMC Savana Cargo Van have made it a more modern, dressed up commercial hauler than its closest competitor, the Ford Econoline. It was also the first cargo van to offer all-wheel drive and an optional driver's side door in addition to the standard passenger door. The 2006 Savana Cargo Van comes in half-ton (1500), three-quarter ton (2500) and one-ton (3500) models, with an extended, 20-inch longer wheelbase offered on the latter two. This means maximum cargo capacity on the 3500 reaches 317 cubic feet. This year, the 2006 Savana Cargo gets an optional 6.6-liter, 250-hp turbodiesel V8 that has 460 lb-ft of torque for the 2500 and 3500. This is in addition to the standard 4.3-liter, 195-hp V6 for th 1500, the 4.8-liter, 285-hp V8 on the 2500 and the 6.0-liter, 300-hp V8 with 360 lb-ft of torque. The AWD feature is offered only on the 1500 and comes with a 5.3-liter, 295-hp V8 with 330 lb-ft of torque. Seating is for two, and interior features are minimal. This generation of the 2006 Savana Cargo features a stiffer suspension, stronger stabilizer bars, and improved brakes, along with Stabilitrak for better handling and 5-star crash ratings, though some drivers say the maneuverability and ride can be erratic, especially when loaded. When the 3500 is loaded with the 6.0 V8, it can tow up to 10,000 pounds. Drivers like this hauling capacity, and the exterior styling also gets praised. Interior materials are disappointingly cheap-looking.
