Used 2006 Mercury Mariner Hybrid for Sale near New York, NY
Ford used its Escape Hybrid to provide the underpinnings of the Mariner Hybrid. Mercury added upscale exterior and interior styling to the Mariner, along with a more-compliant suspension to attract youthful, luxury-oriented buyers.
The Mariner employs a hybrid system similar to that of the Toyota Prius: It combines a fuel-efficient four-cylinder gasoline engine with two electric motors and transmits their power through an electronically controlled CVT (continuously variable transmission) - differences are limited to the size of the engine, motors, and battery pack.
The 2.3-liter, 133-hp gas engine powers the wheels and the electric generator that powers the electric traction motor, which adds its 94 hp to the wheels and handles reverse gear. The 38-hp starter motor recharges the battery pack, controls the CVT transmission, and adds power to the traction motor. The battery pack recharges during braking, via the gas motor, or through the electric generator. The driver can monitor the power transmission on a dashboard view screen. Up to 25 mph, the electric motor does all the work, thus city mileage produces the highest gas mileage figures.
Start the Mariner Hybrid, and you'll listen to the sounds of silence, since only the electric motor switches on. While seamless in its city performance, which involves lots of switching between gas and electric propulsion, reviewers complained about excessive engine noise at highway speeds.
Careful driving achieved the best gas mileages. The EPA claims 29/32 mpg, highway/city. However, one reviewer got an average of 27.6 mpg. Adjusting his driving style - restrained acceleration, sticking to speed limits, staying under 20 mph between stop signs - he recorded an average 31.4 mpg in 500 miles of mixed driving. Another reviewer reported 30 to 35 mpg in mixed driving, but after employing "every trick" to conserve fuel, recorded 44 mpg.
Hybrid technology adds $3,000 to the price of an equally equipped standard Mariner, but a tax credit offsets some of this added expense.
The Mariner Hybrid, with its energy efficiency packaged in an upscale, compact SUV, offers you cake - lots of room for it - and the opportunity - by saving you on your fuel bills - to eat it, too!

(5 reviews)performance - not great on acceleration but enough for a hybrid braking feels a bit odd, due to the regen braking effect, but is steady and straight when needed. cornering is ok for an suv, these are a little stiffer and sportier than most build quality - the quality is good for a domestic, the hybrid makes funny noises (normal) gas mileage is good at 28mpg avg., a little lower than the posted 30-34mpg, but with the awd this is to be expected
Bought this car used in December as a Ford Certified Preowned (100,000 mile warranty and what not) for 15,000. 30,000 miles on it at the time, now she's got 47,000 on her. I need an SUV for surfing/camping and for work and have a '95 Bronco but 13 mpg was hitting the pocket book pretty hard. This mini - ute has steadily returned 25+ mpg, is quiet, has more power than I thought a four cylinder hybrid would, and IMO looks extremely classy. I looked at the Excursion, the Escape, and the Chevy Equinox as well and for the money and creature comforts this one couldn't be beat. It has all the bells and whistles; leather, sunroof, 6 disc CD changer, Nav system, and heated seats - all of which are welcome. The 4wd system is automatic so I never have to worry about getting out to lock in the hubs or push a button. The hybrid system really is a work of art - it is virtually seam less to all but the most sensitive of drivers. Its great for slow (under 30 mph) driving and it makes you re-evaluate your drivin habits, I have found myself trying to see how long I can keep it in "electric only" mode. All things considered this is a very capable SUV (except towing is not recommended), looks great, and doesn't burn a hole in your wallet at the gas station.
The interior stying is a little plain, though I do like the exterior looks of this vehicle. Still, I'm growing to really like it! Pleasant to drive, and have I mentioned I'm super excited about the gas mileage? I've received feedback that sitting in the driver's side back seat that the traction battery fan noise is noticeable.
The gas mileage is great, the car drives well, and it has plenty of room for a family of four. I have really enjoyed this car for the six years I have been driving it and I have had no major issues.
im at 81000 miles and so far so good, the axilliary coolant pump went out, cd player and passanger front power window. I enjoy the good miles and tons of cargo space. Its nice to take on long trips.... hope it goes for 10 more years
